Description
UNITED STATES PATENT men.
GARMENT-SUPPORTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 651,600, dated June 12, 1900.
Application filed April 4, 1900.
T0 to whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, SOLOMON FREEHLING, a citizen of the United States,-and a resident of Chicago, county of Cook, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garment-Supporters, of which the following, when taken inv connection with the drawings accompanying and forming a part hereof, is a full and complete description, sufficient to enable those skilled in the art to which it pertains to understand, make, and use the same.
One object of this invention is to obtain a garment-supporter by means of which when desired more than one garment may be secured together and attached to a supporting article of wear, as, say, in gentlemens apparel the device may well be used to secure together the waistbands of a pair of trousers and underdrawers and such device be then attached to one of the ends of a pair of suspenders.
A further object of this invention is to obtainagarment-supporter which may be readily attached to any article of wear and used as a substitute for a button lost therefrom, as, say, again referring to gentlemens apparel, the device may bereadily secured to the waistband of a pair of trousers and when so secured serve as a button to which one end of a pair of suspenders may be attached; and a third object of this invention is to obtain a device of the kind named which when secured to a garment and attached to a supporting article of wear will not readily become detached from its position, but which may when desired be easily so detached.
A still further object of this invention is to obtain adevice of the kind named which shall be simple in construction, not liable to get out of order or repair, durable, and of small cost, and a device whereof its manner of operation will be suggested by its general appearance to one not familiar therewith.
In the drawings referred to as forming a part of this specification, and wherein a reference-letter applied to designate a given part is used to indicate such part through the several views wherever the same appears, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a blank from which one of the parts of the device is formed; Fig. 2, a perspective view of the element ob- Serial No; 11,490. (No model.)
tainedby forming the blank illustrated in Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a perspective view of an element additional to the one illustrated in Fig. 2 and one working complementary therewith; Fig. 4, a perspective view of a post having disks thereon forming the button and looking part of the device; Fig. 5, a top plan view of the device; Fig. 6, a side elevation of the device, such device being opened, and a sectional view of a portion of a garment placed between the engaging jaws thereof; Fig. 7, a side elevation of the device, such device being closed, and a sectional view of a garment placed between the jaws thereof; and Fig. 8, a vertical sectional view on line 8 8 of Fig.7, viewed in the direction indicated by the arrows.
A is a blank. (1 a are prongs or projections on blank A.
D is an aperture in blank A, formed by punching or cutting out a portion of such blank. Aperture D may be said to comprise three parts 02 01 d 7 Part d constitutes aslot in which the shank o'f the button E (illustrated in perspective in Fig. 4) slides when the blank A is bent up into shape, as illustrated in Fig. 2, and assembled with part B and such button E. Part (1 constitutes an opening through which part B extends, in the manner hereinafter more fully described, and part at an opening through which disk 6' of the button E extends in the operation of the device, in the manner hereinafter more fully described.
d d are respectively broken lines in'Fig. 1, indicating the lines on which the blank A is bent to form the element shown in perspective in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
Bis a sheet-metal part forming an element engaging with and working complementary to the element A. (Shown in perspective in Fig. 2 of the drawings.)
0t a are prongs or projections on element or part B, which are bent or formed into engaging teeth of the device, as is well illustrated in Fig. 6 of the drawings.
1) is a slot in part or element B, in which slot shank e of the button E is readily movable longitudinally of such part.
b b are notches formed by cutting or punching out a portion of the body part of part B, and b b are broken lines indicating the lines on which the parts b are bent over onto adjacent portions of the part or element 13, as indicated by broken lines b b in Fig. 3, in order to insert the end thereof having such parts 6 so bent over thereon through part d of aperture D of part A, so as to bring e, adjacent to the under side of blank B,
disk 6 adjacent to the upper side of part B when the device is open, as in Fig. 6, and adjacent to the upper face of part A when the device is closed, as in Fig. 7, shank c extending through the supporting article to which the device is attached, and disk 6, forming, with shank e the button holding the supporting article (as one end of a pair of suspenders) on the shank 6 The shoulders d d hold the part B up adjaeent to the slotted part of the element A when the device is opened, as illustrated in Fig. 6.
F, Figs. 6 and 7, is a section of asm'all portion of an article of clothing.
The operation of the device is as follows: When the button E is slid to the position thereof illustrated in Fig. 6 of the drawings, the jaws of the device may be opened, as is illustrated in such Fig. 6, and an article of clothing may be inserted between such jaws. The jaws are then closed and the button E slid from the position thereof illustrated in Fig. 7, at which time the ends of the part A B adjacent to the button E are between disks 6 c and are held firmly together thereby, thus holding the garment F in place between the jaws of the device.
Disk 6 and shank e form a button over which an article of wear having a buttonhole therein may be buttoned, as, say, an elastic or 'a suspender.
To unloosen the device from the garment F, the button is slid from the position thereof illustrated in Fig. 7 into substantially the position thereof illustrated in Fig. 6, when the jaws are readily opened, as illustrated in said Fig. 6. In sliding the button E from the position thereof illustrated in Fig. 6 intothe position thereof illustrated in Fig. 7 and back again the shank c enters and leaves the slot (1, but remains at all times in slot Z), and the disk 6 passes through part d of aperture D.
Having thus described myinvcntion, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a garment-supporter, the combination of a plate consisting of a blank provided with an aperture therethrough and formed into a perpendicular middle part, and horizontal end parts in substantially-parallel planes, the aperture in the blank forming a slot in one of the horizontal parts of the plate and an opening formed to present shoulders through the perpendicular part thereof, an additional plate extending through the widest transverse part of the aperture in the perpendicular part of the first-named plate, and held adjacent to the first-named plate by the shoulders formed in the periphery of the aperture, and such additional plate provided with transverse slots engaging with the perpendicular part of the first-named plate, and also provided with a longitudinally-extending slot, and a button consisting of disks and ashank, the disks adjacent to the plates, respectively, when the device is closed and secured together, and the shank extending, at such time, through the slots in both plates and such button movable out of the slot in one plate, through the aperture in the perpendicular part thereof and to the opposite end of the slot in the other plate; substantially as described.
2. In a garment-supporter, the combination of a plate consisting of a blank provided with an aperture therethrough and formed into a perpendicular middle part and hori zontal end parts in substantially-parallel planes, the aperture in the blank forming a slot in one of the horizontal parts of the plate and an opening through the perpendicular part thereof, an additional plate extending through the aperture in the perpendicular part of the first-named plate, such additional plate provided with transverse slotsengaging with the perpendicular part of the first-named plate, and also provided with a longitudinally-extending slot, and a button consisting of disks and a shank, the disks adjacent to the plates, respectively, when the device is closed and secured together and the shank ICO extending at such time through the slots in IIC
