Description

` To all whom it 'may concern:
of `Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Paper Bags; and we do hereby declare that i `the following is a full, clear, and exact dei nscription thereof, which will enable others 1" skilled in the art to make. and usethe same, reference being had to the accompanying drawi ings, forming part of this specification, in
il which- `Figure l is a plan of the cut or pattern of 'thebag before folding and pasting. Fig.`2 is a plan of the bag half-folded for receiving the paste. Fig. 3 is a plan of the bag when pasted. Similar letters of` reference indicate like i parts.
y This invention relates to an improved mode of making paper bags; and consists in cutting 1the material ont and folding the edges tof gether in' such a manner as to make a conical bagwith a flap cap or cover for securing i i whatever the bag may contain. l Theadvantage of this bag is found in its extreme simplicity and great economy in the use of material, the application of the material being such that the whole .supercies of i `l. the paper is utilized in forming a bag ofthe i y largest possible dimensions, while the narrow "laps employed for folding and pasting the edges together are strong, and `the shape of H the bag `is very convenient for putting things `j into it andsecuring them ina neat package or parcel.
The paper is cut into parallelograms, or equilaterally, as shown in Fig. 1, except at `l `one corner, Where a point is formed by the apex a of a central triangle, a b c,by`cutting smalltriangular piece, a. i 0, 0n each side 'ofthe/apex from the {lap-pieces b e wand c d thus cut inthe pattern of the bag have their UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.

." The small equal triangular offsets a i o base-lines c 'i parallel with the` central diago-v. nal line e d of the square,so thatwhen the side flaps b, e o and c dio fi arefoldedi down and lappedto forma bag, as shown in Fig. 3, small spaces s s of singleipaper will be left f i; for the lap of the apex o!I to lie inpon, and thus l make a strong and perfect attachment atthe i bottom or small end of the conical bag which f will be forme 1 In order to4 fold and paste the bag together, the side Hap-piece c d ofi is turnednbackon the line a c of e triangle a b c,;the `edge o d extending a little over the;` central line wf, and when the side iap is in `this positionia` narrow strip, indicated in Ared 1 lnear theedge o d, and extending to `thepoint ofzthe apex a, is covered with a coat of paste in theordinary way, upon which;` is first foldeddown the other i side flap, b e o i, and then the apex a, is turned 2 over and also `folded down, asshownin Fig, y 3, to complete the, bag. The` triangular piece i b cf left forms a tap or cover for `the conical"` bag thus put together. t y y i It will be seen that: the `point a. i o may jbe cut in any desiredifornr for y folding over as a closing-cap of the apex of a conicalbag withi out changing its cliharacter and oice. y i y' Having thus described our invention, i we claim as` new and desire to secure by Letters 1 Patenti f: The triangular per bag `constructed as 1- described, by folding the sidesd cone-upon the other, of the `pa"rallelogram cut with `the apex a, as shownlin Fig; `1, in the lines icand 'i b, upon the trianglilar.centerdescribed apex a over the said folded sides e d, "ashere-n f in set forth, for the purpose specified.`
