PAPER BAG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 398,908, dated March 5, 1889.
Application filed June 5, 1888. Serial No. 276,078. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE J STEVENS, of Bostomin the county of SutfollnStat-e of Mas- 1 sachusett-s, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Paper Bags, of which i the following is a description sufficiently full, clear, and exact to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which said invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a plan view of the blank from which my improved bag is constructed, the side shown forming the outer side of the bag when folded; Fig. 2, a like View of the side opposite to that shown in Fig. l, or inner side of the bag; Fig. 3, a plan view similar to that shown in Fig. 2, and representing the first fold in the process of forming the bag; Fig. 4, a side elevation of the bag, the flaps and a pori tion of the bottom being represented as unsecured; Fig. 5, a like View showing the bottom folded and the flaps unsecured; Fig. 6, a perspective view of the finished ba Fig. 7, an enlarged vertical section taken on linexm in Fig. 6; and Figs. 8 and 9,perspective views showing a modification of my improvement.
Like letters and figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures of the drawings. v
My invention relates more especially to a paper bag having a double or re-enforced bot tom; and it consists in certain novel features, as hereinafter fully set forth and claimed, the 1 object being to produce a simpler, cheaper, and more desirable article of this character than is now in ordinary use.
The nature and operation of the improvement will be readily understood by all conversant with such matters from the following explanation.
In the drawings, A represents the blank, considered as a whole. The blank is creased on two parallel transverse folding-lines, .2 r, dividing it into a body portion, B, and side pieces, D, and also on a longitudinal foldingline, 922, near its lower edge, dividing or setting off bottom pieces, G H. The blank is cut diagonally from the intersection of each line .2 v with the line m across the piece H, as shown by the slits p in Fig. 1, to the lower edge thereof, forming triangular [laps/'1 The outer side of the piece ll is coated with adhesive paste or cement, as shown at l) in Fig. 1,-the edge of the inner face of one side piece, D, and the inner faces of the bottom pieces G and flaps f being also coated, as shown at (1 g 71, respectively, in Fig. 2.
In forming the bag from the blank A, as described, it is laid flat in the position shown in Fig. 2 and the bottom piece H bent inward on the line on against the side portion, 13, assuming the position represented in Fig.3, its pasted side h being uppermost. The righthand side piece D is then folded over the line o against the pasted side 71 of the bottom piece H, which adheres thereto. The left-h and side piece D is next folded in the same manner on the line .2 2, its pasted edge (I adhering to the edge of the opposite side piece D, thus holdin g them in position and securing them to the bottom piece H, as shown in Fig. 7, the blank being then in the position shown in Fig. 4.
The bottom pieces G are next turned back on 7 5 the line on against the outer face of the body portion B, to which its pasted faces g adhere, as shown in Fig. 7, the blank being in the position shown in Fig. 5. The flaps f are now bent on their lines o 2 against the outer faces of the side pieces D D and secured thereto by the pasted faces h, thus forming the completed bag, as shown in Fig. 6.
It will readily be seen that by constructing the bag as described I am enabled to greatly strengthen it at the bottom, which is provided with two thicknesses of paper on each side thereof, as shown in 7, thus rendering it much more durable and less liable to tear than when constructed with three layers of paper at one side of the bottom and a single thickness at the opposite side. Moreover, in my improved bag there are no loose parts left in the interior of the bottom portion to catch and retain the contents thereof, as sometimes 00- 5 ours in the use of ordinary bags of this character.
In the modification shown in Figs. S and 9 the edges 'v z of the bag are bent inward to form a square side. flap, K, at each lower corner of the bag, which is pasted on its upper face and bent on a line against the side, where it is secured. This forms a bag which. is rectangular in shape,
This leaves a triangular 10o which greatly facilitates the filling thereof, and, in addition, re=enforces or strengthens the lower corners by the addition of said flaps.
Having thus explained my invention, what I claim is 1. The improved blank for forming paper bags herein described, the same consisting of a rectangular sheet; provided with two transverse creases or folding-iii] es which set off side pieces and a longitndimil crease or foldingline which sets off bottom pieces, said blank being slit from the intersections of said creaselines diagonally across the center bottom piece, thus leaving a triangular flap on each outer bottom piece, and adapted to be folded and secured, subsiantiall y as set forth.
A paper bag consisting of the blank A, provided with the parallel creases or foldinglines n 2', the longitudinal crease or folding"- line 772, and the diagonal slits p, out from the points of intersection of said lines, whereby the blank is divided into the body portion B,
side pieces, D,bottom pieces, G H, and flaps f, I
said bottom pieces, flaps, and side pieces being' secured together, so that the bottom por- 2 5 tion of the bag is of equal double thickness throughout, substantially as set forth.
A paper bag coi'lsisting of a blank comprising the body portion B, provided with the bottom piece H and side pieces, D, having the 0 bottom pieces i, provided with triangular flaps f, the bottom piece H being pasted to the inner faces of said side pieces, the piece G pasted to the outer face of the body portion B, and the flaps f to the outer face of said side 35
