JAMES ARKELL, OF OANAJOIIARIE, NEV YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN PAPER BAGS.
Spmilimttion forming part of Letterslatcnt No. 209,538, dated (Mitchel-29,1878; application filed July 18, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES ARKELL, of Oanajoharie, in the county of Montgomery and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bags and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.
Previous to my invention it has been'customary in the manufacture of satchel-bottom bags to produce such bags with bottoms of two kinds, viz., either of that kind in which the last two folded-down and pasted flap-like portions were what are generally called V- shaped, or of that kind in which said flaps were what are generally called square flaps that is, about rectangular in contour.
Now, each kind of satchel-bottom mentioned has certain advantages over the other, either in respect to the facility and economy with which it can be manufactured or as to superiority of structure in respect to the strength, appearance, 800., of the finished article. For instance, while the bag having its last two folded-down and pasted flap-like portions V- shaped may be made either by hand or machinery more expeditiously than the other kind of bag, and presents a greater number of thicknesses of stock in the vicinity of the middle of the bottom, where the latter is most apt to bulge out of shape, the bag having itslast two folded and pasted fiap-like portions about rectangular in contour presents a bottom of neater appearance, in which the stock is distributed about evenly (as to the number of thicknesses) throughout, and one in which the last flap forms a large and even surface for printing or labeling the bottom of the baglike package, which last-mentioned advantage is one of much importance.
My present invention has for its object the production of a satchel-bottom bagcombining in an eminent degree the more desirable of the characteristics peculiar to each of the two kinds of satchel-bottom bags mentioned; and to this end and object my invention consists in a satchel-bottom bag having one of its two last folded-and pasted down flaps V-shape'd and the other one about rectangular in contour, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth and specified.
To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to more fully explain the construction and operation of my improved satchel-bottom bag, referring by letters to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a view of the lower part of the seam side of the usual flattened tubular blank from which a satchel bottom bag is made. Fig. 2 is a similar viewof the other side of the bag-blank, showing that in this side are made two cuts or slits at a and b.
Abag-blank thus out at one side, when its end shall have been opened out and flattened down, either by hand or machinery, presents the appearance seen at Fig. 3, from which it will be observed that if such a blank, so prepared, be then folded over at the dotted lines 0 d and e or thereabout, and the flap-like foldedover portions be pasted down as usual, the result will be a satchel-bottom bag such as shown at Fig. 4, in which one of the last two folded flaps g will be V-shaped, while the other one, h, will be about rectangular; and that thus a satchel-bottom bag is made, which, while like both kinds heretofore known and used in the particulars in which such kinds are alike, has one of its last two folded-down and pasted flap-like portions V-shaped, like one of the heretofore-used kinds of bag, and the other square, like the other previouslyknown kind of bag.
N ow, in a bag the bottom of which is made as shown and described, and combining certain ones of the characteristic :features of structure of each of the two prior forms of satchel-bottom, are presented advantages over either of the two previously-known kinds, for while the new kind of bag involves less labor and expense in its manufacture than that kind having all rectangular flaps, it presents an exterior flap for printing and labeling equal in extent to that presented in that kind of bag, and the novel combination of outer flaps of the two forms results in this novel effect,
that the exterior or fourth flap-like portion,
lying across the V-shaped third flap and overlapping at its corner onto the two inner flaps down and pasted flap-like portions-of which of the bottom, serves as a binder to tie or are composed of one V-shaped and one rectanfasten the V-shaped flap to the crosswise ingular flap, substantially as shown and dener flaps of the'bag-bottom. scribed, for the purposes set forth.
Having so fully explained the structure and In testimony whereof I havehereunto placed advantages of my improved satchel-bottom my hand this 12th day of July, 1878.
bag that those skilled in the art will fully un- JAS ARKEI L derstand the nature of and how to practice my J invention, what I claim as new, and desire to In presence of--- secure by Letters Patent, is- P. D. VAN OLINDA, A satchel-bottom bag the last two folded- W. S. BRUMLEY.
