UNTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAKOB SCHAFFER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
UCKET-HANDLE.
EC C E N forming part of Letters Patent No. 713,505, dated November 11, 1902.
Application filed April 10, 1901- Serial No. 55,215. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAKOB SOHAFFER, a cit-izen of the United States, residing at Manhattan borough, in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvementsin Handles forVVashboileraBath- Tubs, and the Like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a handle adapted for use in connection with boilers, by which term is understood not only washboilers, but other articles, such as bath or other tubs or any utensil capable of utilizing such a handle.
By means of this invention the handle can be cheaply and strongly made and can be applied in such manner and shape as may be called for.
The invention is set forth in the following specification and claims, and illustrated in the annexed drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of the handle attached to a washboiler or vessel. Fig. 2 is a front view of the handle. Fig. 3 is a sectional side elevation of Fig. 2. Fig. dshows a modification.
The handle consists of a bracket of a single strip of material formedwith the connecting portion 3, which is bent to form the outwardly and upwardly extending inclined arms 1 and 2. The connecting portion 3 is adapted to be secured to the boiler and serves to hold together the seam thereof. A portion of the boiler is indicated at A and one of its seams at A. To the outer ends of arms 1 2 is suitably attached the grip 4c. The connecting or cross piece 3 can be attached, as by the rivets 5, where required, to a narrower or wider attaching-surface of the boiler, as the rivetholes can be put more or less apart, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2.
The grip part 4 is practically made as a sleeve or roller of wood or non-conducting material mounted or rotating on a pin 6, connecting or-mounted at the free or outer ends of the handle-arms.
The bracket is readily formed. A strip of thin or sheet metal being cut ofi at suitable length can be shaped to a bail or bent by die operation to form the cross part 3 and arms 1 and 2. The cross part, as already noted, is adapted for engaging a boiler and looking a seam of the same. The arms have the broad faces of the component strip in a vertical plane. In other words, the direction of greatest strength of the sheet-metal arms lies parallel to or in the direction of the weight or strain of the boiler when the latter is lifted or supported by and pulls on the handle. At the angles between the cross part and the arms the metal can be given a certain degree of twist if an inclination or non-horizontal di rection is required for the armssuch, for eX- ample, as an upward inclination. By doubling the cross part 3 or bending the same or part thereof back 011 itself, as indicated at 3, Fig. 4, a strengthened portion is obtained at which a rivet can secure firm hold.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A handle comprising a bracket, consisting of a single piece of material, bent upon itself a portion of its length to form reinforced ends and then torsionally twisted to form a pair of outwardly and upwardly extending inclined arms, and a grip suitably secured between the ends of said arms.
2. A handle comprising a bracket, consisting of a single piece of material having portions of its length bent upon itself to form reinforced ends and further torsionally twisted to form a pair of arms, and a grip suitably connected to the said arms.
3. A handle comprising a bracket consisting of a single piece of material having a part of its length bent in a curvilinear manner and a portion at each end thereof torsionally twisted to form a pair of arms adapted to extend upwardly and outwardly at an inclination from the receptacle the bracket is adapted to be secured to, and a grip arranged between and connected to said arms.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JAKOB SOHAFFER.
