To all whom, it near/y c0noern:

Be it known that I, ERNST F.PRIDDAT, a citizen'of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tie-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in fastening devices for use in tying packages with cord or twine.

My object is to provide as a means for facilitating the operation of tying packages with cord and rendering the tying secure a fastener of improved construction which may be quickly applied to hold the ends of the cord and insure its remaining taut and at the same time be of a construction which will make it inexpensive to manufacture.

My object is further to provide a fastener of the class described which may also operate as a holder for a removable button.

In the drawings, Figure 1 shows a package tied with a cord extending in two directions around the same, the cord being held at its ends by a fastener of my improved construction in one preferred form adapted to hold a removable button, which operates as a shoulder across which the cord is drawn in changing its direction around the package; Fig. 2, an enlarged section of the fastener, taken on line 2 in Fig. 1; Figs. 3 and 4, two desirable forms of the fastener; and Figs. 5 and 6 fasteners of the same general form as those shown in Figs. 3 and tfor use with buttons like that shown in Fig. 2.

The fasteners are formed by stamping them out of sheet metal or other suitable material with suitable dies, or they may be cast or shaped out of wire, if preferred.

The fastener consists of a plate or body portion A, provided with cord or twine gripping slots 0,. The-mouths or open ends a, of the slots 0. are toward the middle of the body portion, and the slots extend, as 'shown, into the bodyportionin contrary or approximately contrary directions toward opposite ends thereof.- The slots ware inwardly tapering,

as shown, to present large openings at their months, into whichthe cord B may be'readily passed, and contracted inner parts forming grips which will engage and securely hold the ends of the cord. It is desirable to have the slots extend in opposite directions toward the extremities of the body portion, as described, whereby they may extend in more or less direct line with the cord as it is passed in one direction around the package. Thus by merely drawing upon the cord and passing it into a slot it will be gripped and held taut without the necessity of winding it around the fastener in an arbitrary way for security.

The fastener may be employed where the cord is passed in but one direction around the package,or where it is crossed on the back or reverse side of the package to extend in two directions, as shown in Fig. 3.

O is a button which may, if desired, be ornamented or provided on its face with the advertisement of the business or concern employing the fastener. Where it is desired to employ the button with a shank of the form shown in Fig. 2, the plate A is provided in a convenient place with a socket I), having a mouth or neck portion 12, through which the shank c of the button may be slipped to rest firmlyin the socket. When in place, the button presents a stud or shoulder across which the cord may be drawn in changing its direction around the package, and across which it may again be drawn to tighten it before it is slipped into one of the end-fastening slots. The cord thus also operates to hold the button securely in place. It will be seen that the device does away with the necessity of tying a knot at either end of the cord.

My improved device may be advantageously employed on packages that are to be shipped through the mail and require to be so secured that they may be readily opened for the inspection of the contents.

The shape of the fastener and button and the means for holding the button reinovably in place may be changed without departing from the spirit of myinvention as defined by the claims. a

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. In a tie-fastener for packages, the combination of a plate or body-provided with a cord-engaging slot, 2. button and means upon the said body for holding the button removably in place. i g
