SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 712,094, dated October 28, 1902.

To all whom it may concern,.- A Beit known that I, SHEPHERD J. RAYMOND,

a citizen of the United States, residing at 1201 Bergen street, Brooklyn, Kings county, State of New York, have invented a new and useful Jar or Bottle and Cover or Stopper for a Jar, Can, Bottle, or other Vessel, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in jars or bottles and in covers or Stoppers for Vessels, so that they may be hermetically closed more perfectly and more quickly than at present. I attain this object by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is the top View of the lid or cover A applied. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of a jar D with the stopper or cover A applied. Fig. 3 is a top view of the cover A alone. Fig. 4L is a vertical view of the top of the jar or vessel D. Figs. 5 and 6 show, respectively, the vertical and top View of another method of applying the lug, hereinafter mentioned, to the jar D.

A is the lid or cover.

C represents the elevations to rotate the cover.

D is the jar or vessel.

The top or cover consists of a plate of glass, metal, or other material having on the top of it close to the outside edge two incline planes directly'opposite each other, running in opposite directions, as indicated in Fig. l, letter a, starting from nothing and rising gradually to an elevation of about a quarter of an inch in the present case or to such an elevation as may be desired. In the circumference of the rim at the beginning of the incline are two cuts or slots b of sufficient size to allow the lugs d or d to pass through them. There is also on the top of the plate A two elevations C, placed, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, a short distance apart, so that they may be seized by the thumb and rst finger or a small rod be dropped between them in order to rotate the cover.

The top of the vessel itself Yhas two lugs d or d', rising about a quarter of an inch in the present case above the Vessel D on the outside perpendicularly and directly opposite each other, with a lug d or d projecting inward horizontally, as shown, in the present case about three-quarters of an inch, which must be strong enough to hold the lid A down. The rim of the vessel is slightly channeled, e, so that a gasket of rubber g or other Inaterial may be laid upon it, the plate or lid A having a small circular protuberance on the under side a', which will t in said channel e. The lugs may be either part ofthe jar D, as shown in Fig. 4, or may be attached to it by the shoulders, as shown in Figs. 5.and 6, d2, or in any other manner, so that they can be held firm. K

What'I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The combination, with the jar-body having an interiorly-projecting annular packingledge e and opposite clamping-lugs d projecting upward and inward over the ledge e, of the jar-cover A, having opposite peripheral slots b to admit the lugs d, an annular shoulder a on its under side to engage the packingledge e, opposite peripheral inclined bearings on its top to engage the under sides of the lugs d, and force the shoulder a downward against the ledge e, and rotating means C.
