Description

NITED STATES PATENT Finca.
CALVIN FORBUSH, OF RICHMOND HILL, NEW YORK.
BOTTLE-STOPPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 669,386, dated March 5, 1901.
l Application flied Aprn4,19oo. serai No. 11,469. (Numan.)
To .all whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, CALVIN FoRBUsH, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, (Richmond Hill,) in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Bottle-Stopper, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to Stoppers for bottles, and has for its object to produce a simple and eicient device which will be very effective in sealing the bottle, which can be applied quickly and easily, and which can be removed without the use of a tool. I attain this object by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a view of a bottle with my improved bottle-stopper applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section through the neck of the bottle and stopper, taken at right angles to Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the clamping-cap.
In the accompanying drawings like parts are indicated by the same numerals of reference in each of the views, and in the praetice of my invention I provide a metal cap 5,
proportioned in size to fit snugly on the top of the bottle 6, and within the cap 5 I mount a cork or elastic packing 8, which is the same in diameter as the interior of the said cap or a trifle greater in diameter, so as to t tightly within said cap. `I also provide a clampingplate 9, which is provided with a lug 10, which may be integral therewith or may be secured thereto, and through which is passed the bail 11 of a clamp 12 of any desired construction, preferably the Well-known construction shown in the drawings, and by means of which it is held in place, as will be readily understood, and the under side of the clamping-plate 9 has a central convex portion 13, as clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
In operation, the bottle being irst filled, the cap 5 is placedin position on the bottle, so that the cork or elastic packing-plate 8 will rest over the mouth of the bottle. The clamping-plate 9 is then placed upon the top of the cap 5 and is drawn down upon the same by the clamping device 12, and this clamping device is so proportioned in size, as well as the convex part 13 of the clamping-plate 9, that the said convex part will depress the central part of the cap 5 and packing-plate 8 and force the central part of said packingplate 8 below the plane of the mouth of the bottle, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, while the rim of the clamping plate or cap 9 will force the packing-plate into close contact with the edge or rim of the bottle surrounding the mouth, as is also clearly shown in said figure, and a veryT tight seal will be the result. It will thus be seen that by this construction I am able to provide a bottle-stopper which can be secured in place and removed without the use of an instrument of any kind. With it I can make a very tight seal, and the stopper can be used a large number of times without the deterioration to any appreciable extent of any part except the packing-plate 8, which can be easily and inexpensively renewed.
I do not confine myself to the material used nor to the extension of the cap 5 down over the neck of the bottle nor to the formation of the lug 10, but reserve the right to make all changes which fairly come within the scope of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a bottle-stopper, a cap, a packingplate mounted therein, a clamping plate mounted thereon, said clamping-plate being provided with a convex under surface, and means to clamp said clamping-plate upon said cap, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A bottle-stopper, comprising a cap, a packing-plate mounted therein, a clampingplate mounted thereon, and provided with a lug having an aperture therethrough, and a clamping device, as 12, having a bail adapted to pass through said apertured lug, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence ofv two subscribing witnesses.
CALVIN FORBUSH.
