REPLACING-TOOL FOR BOTTLE-CAPS.
Specification of Letters Patent;
Patented Nov. 10, 1914.
Applicatioh filed May 11, 1912. Serial No. 696,771.
To all whom it ma concern:
Be it known t at I, GEORGE KALKBREN- NER, acitizen of the United States, and resident of Albany, in the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Replacing-Tools for Bottle-Caps, of which the follow ng is a specification.
This invention relates to replacers for caps and stoppers for bottles and especially thosecontaining liquids charged with gases, the object being to replace the ca on the bottle when once removed so that tie bottle is again made air and gas'tight, and the strength and quality of the liquid preserved.
The invention consists of a cup shaped'device having a lateral handle which aids and assists in the replacing of the cap as will be more fully described in the following speci,
fication, set forth in the claim and illustrated in the drawings, wherein,-'
Figure 1 is a perspective View of the replacer. Fig. 2 is. a top plan view of the instrument. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view. Fig. 4- is a side View. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal sectional view.
The'device is made from sheet metal and may be stamped in quantities at a very moderate cost and consists of a cup 10 with sloping sides and flared along the edge 11. The diameter of this cup .is about equal to the cap placed on beer and other bottles and is of suflicient dimension to press down upon the crimped lower edge of the ca J and force it'with the indentations under tie head at the mouth of the bottle. This is effected by the downward pressure of the cup 10 upon the cap so as to properly position the cap and a rocking motion of the handle 12, while pressure is still applied. to the upper end of the cap. By performing this rocking mo tion at several points around the edge of the cap, the crimps are firmly driven back into their original positions beneath the bead close and aflix the crimped e and the cap is replaced as securely as when originally put in position by the oblong and capping machine now commonly in use. The handle 12 being made of sheet metal is strengthened by means of a rib 13 formed on the upper face thereofwhich not only prevents bending but adds strength to the device while replacing a cap. The outer end 14 of the handle is enlarged to a diameter to about equal the cap, and depending fingers 15 are provided and which may be found useful to more securelygrasp the handlewhile replacing the cap. The inclined sides of the cap provide a cup which acts to c ges of the cap to the bottle neck when pressure is brought to bear thereon. The manipulating handle 12, is disposed laterally from the cap and in parallel relation with the circular edge 11 of the cap to the end of obtaining the maximum leverage of the handle in applying the crimped edges of the caps to the bottle neck. The bottom of the cup 10 may be formed with an opening 16 of such a shape that it can be used as a key for faucets, door-knobs and the like, but it is obvious that other useful details may be added without departing from the essential features above described and within the limits of the appended claim.
What I claim as new is A portable recrimping tool for used bottle caps, comprising a metal cap having in clined inner walls adapted to fit over and replace the cap while compressing the crimps about the mouth of the bottle by means of a rocking action around the edges thereof, and a rigid manipulating handle extending outwardly therefrom.
Signed at Albany in the county of Albany and State of New York.
