FuLcRuM TYPE CROWN CAP REMovER Filed Deo. l. 1948 J0 lj ./f/ v 1 Z 40 455e? a? @juana gg f?? v I N VEN TOR.
ATTE] RN EYB Patented Nov. 20, 1951 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE FULCRUMVTYPE CROWN CAP REMOVER Charles H. Cowan, Jr., St.letersburg, Fla. Application December 1, 1948, Serial No. 62,877
1 Claim. 1
My present invention relates to an improved fulcrum type crown cap remover of the type adapted to be manually operated to detach and remove the conventional crown cap usually employed to seal and close beverage bottles.
The opener of my invention is an improvement on the type of opener which is operated by downward pressure upon a lever to pry up the opposite side of the cap and is designed to eliminate slippage of the opener about the cap and to reduce the possibility of breaking or chipping the bottle neck.
In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated one complete example of the physical embodiment of my invention according to the best mode I have thus far devised, but it will be understood that various changes and alterations may be made in the exemplified structure within the scope of the appended claim.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a side elevational View of the opener of my invention in position on and `engaging a cap to be removed.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section view therethrough.
Fig. 3 is a side elevational view similar to Fig. 1 showing the cap pried up.
Fig. 4 is a rear elevational View of the opener.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view in section of the opener showing the arcuate engaging nib.
Fig. 6 is a sectional view at line 6 6 of Fig. 2.
Referring now to the drawings wherein I have illustrated the present preferred embodiment of my invention I show a beverage bottle 2 having a reduced neck 4 and annular rib. The usual crown cap 8 has a crimped Ilange Il] which engages the rib, and which must be expanded and deformed for removal.
The opener of my invention comprises a bar l2 formed with a central ball I4 engaging the approximate center of the cap, and a handle I6 disposed at less than a right angle and covered with a resilient material I8 as rubber tubing.
The other end of the bar is bent downwardly at right angles as at 20 and then is bent inwardly 2 at 22 to form the nib arm 24. The end of this arm is provided with an arcuate end, 26, rounded as at 28, and the end is recessed as at 30, the inner wall 32 being arcuate to provide a shelf of arcuate formation of approximately the same radius as that of the cap ange.
In use the bar is placed over the cap with the handle extending outwardly and downwardly of the bottle, and the shelf is positioned under and in contact with the crimped flange of the cap.
Downward pressure upon the handle, the resilient covering bearing against the flange, will press the ball into the cap depressing the center thereof while the nib arm and shelf will raise the cap from the rib.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A bottle opener for crown caps comprising a bar, a ball on the bar forming a fulcrum on the bottle cap at approximately the center thereof, an angular handle on one end of the bar, a resilient covering on the handle engaging one side of the cap, a bent nib arm on the other end of the bar having an arcuate end which is recessed to provide an inner arcuate wall, and a shelf formed by the bottom of the recess end engaging the under side of the cap flange.
