JAR WRENCH.
No. 593,736. Patented NovIl 16, 1897.

ELIAS B. COLYER, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
JAR-WRENCH.
SPECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 593,736, dated November 16, 1897.
Application filed Mar-ch 25, 1895. Serial No. 543,081. (No model.)
`such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same,
reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improved device for opening the screw-caps of fruit-jars; and
it consists in a bent piece of spring-wire itted v with a soft iiexible covering and provided with suitable handles, as will befully described hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of one of my improved implements, which is constructed and arranged in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a detailed sectional view of a portion of the same.
To construct an implement for opening and closing fruit-jars in accordance with my invention, I providev a piece of steel or other suitable wire 1 and cover a portion of the same with a rubber tube 3 and .bend that covered portion in the form of a circle, as shown at Fig. 1 on the drawings. The free ends 2 of this wire 1 are bent at radial lines with the circular portion 3 and the said ends 2 fitted with suitable handles 4, which when the implement is not in use are separated the one from the other. To afford a means for holding the rubber tube 3 firmly to the wire 1, a spiral'thread 5 is formed about the said wire, as shown at Fig. 2 of the drawings, which also provides for the ready turning or feeding of the tube on the thread of the wire on the principle of the screw, as well understood.
In operation two of these implements form a set, the one of large diameter to hold the jar and the other of smaller diameter to grasp the lid or cover. By placing the circle 3 of the smaller implement over the cover in a horizontal position and pressing the handles together the rubber circle is clamped tightly about the said cover, thereby aifording a means of wrenching the same tightly in position, while the larger implement is clamped .about the body of the jar in the same manner. The large implement may be used for vcarrying the jars about from place to place while being lled with fruit.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The jar-opener consisting of the circular wire havingintegrally formed thereon a spiral thread and having handles at its ends, and the rubber tube enveloping said threaded wire, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I hereunto affix my signature this 10th day of August, A. D. 1894.
ELIAS B. COLYER. [L s] In presence of- JAs. J. MCAFEE, M. E. HARRISON.
