BELT-SUPPORTING LOOP ATTACHMENT.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 711,149, dated October 14, 1902.

Be it known that LADDINGTON LBRINCKLE, a citizen of the United States,residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Belt-Supporting Loop Attachments; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to belt-supportin g loop attachments, and has for its object the production of a suitable base-piece of fabric or leather provided with buttonholes near its ends, by means of which it may be attached exteriorly to a pair of trousers, engaging the pairs of buttons customarily placeduponthe'" waistband sides and back to hold the suspenders, the base-piece carrying one or more vertically-disposed loops, through which the body-belt is slipped.

Each constituent element of my invention is described in detail, audits individual office, together with. the mode of operation of the whole, is fully explained hereiubelow.

Of the accompanying drawings, throughout which like letters refer to like parts, Figure 1 is a front View of my invention, full size, showing the usual method of constructing it and the most convenient and effective locations of buttonholes and loop; and Fig. 2 is a view, on a smaller scale, of the front of a pair of trousers, showing my invention attached and indicating the manner of its use.

Considering Fig. 1, letter A marks the oblong base piece or plate, made either of leather or double thicknesses of suitable cloth stitched together, which may or may not inclose the internal stiffening-strip B. Letters 0 and D designate the buttonholes. Itis found to be advantageous to locate the buttonholes near the top edge of the base-piece for the reason that the suspender-buttons are placed usually near the upper edge of the waistband, and in order that the belt shall not rise above the waistbandthe loop must fall principally below the line joining the buttons. As illustrated, the loops support the belt just below the upper edge of the waistband, and that is about the preferred arrangement. The belt itself holds the base-piece fiat against the waistband. 7

While it is the practice of some manufacturers to provide summer trousers with permanent belt-1oops,the greater number of such garments have none. In fact, the loops permanently affixed are not desired by many wearers. By the use of my invention the loops are available when a belt is to be worn and the coat dispensed with, and they may be easily removed when no longer needed.

With reference to the distance apart of buttonholes O and D it is necessary to state that there seems to be no established standard.

Different makers vary the measurement. Hence it is essential that some means be adopted to allow for this irregularity. I am accustomed to make the plate A of the maximum length and to provide additional buttonholes E F G. One or the other of these buttonholes will fall very near the desired point in the majority of instances and will not draw the Waistband greatly awry when engaging the button.

The loop H is transversely placed. Its ends may be sewed either in front or on the back of the base-piece A. It is believed to be within the scope of my inventionto employ more than a single loop, if desired, and to include the stifiening-strip B to preserve the shape.

Fig. 2 indicates plainly the operation. The beltJ passes through the loops and lies against the base-pieces as drawn and holds them fiat against the waistband of the trousers K. The Suspender-buttons 7c of the trousers engage the buttonholes C and D and retain the base A in place.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
