M EANS FOR ATTACHiNG TOOTH M EM BERS.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent N 0. 710,444, dated Oc o '7, 1902.
Application filed December 27, 1900. Serial No. 41,281. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VVILLIS H. DWIGHT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lemars, in the county of Plymouth and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Means for Attaching Tooth Members, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to means for applying members of teeth to the latter, but particularly pertains to means for securing crowns or facings to artificial dentures, the means for attaching either a crown or facing being substantially similar; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of the several parts, which will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a transverse vertical section of a crown, showing the flared socket and a yielding enlargement on the post to fit in the said socket. Fig. 2 is a detail elevation of the post and enlargement.
Similar numerals of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts in the views.
The improved construction is shown in use with a crown,to which itis particularly adapted; but in some instances it may be desired to employ the same in connection with afacing, and for the latter purpose the proportions and dimensions will be varied. The crown l is formed with a frusto-conical seat or recess 2, in which is fitted and secured a similarly-shaped socket 3,0f tubular form and closed at one end. The post 4 is provided with a terminal enlargement 5,also of frustoconical form and constructed of spring metal, the free edge of the said enlargement being formed with notches 6 to permit compression of the enlargement for introduction into the socket. Though the said yielding enlargement will be sufficient under all circumstances to hold apost in place, it is preferred that the socket be supplied with a quantity of cement, as shown, to prevent the post from having a rotary movement, the notches in the edge of the enlargement providing a looking means when indented in the cement. The cement filling will be placed in the socket either by flowing or otherwise, and it will be seen that when the enlargement 5 is pushed into the cement filling a contraction of the free edge will be resisted, and hence said enlargement will be prevented from being withdrawn from the socket. The socket 3 will be formed of suitable metal and will provide a strong wall for receiving the enlargement 5. The post at will be provided with screwthreads; but in some instances the threads may be dispensed with. On the post a cupped band attachment 7 is shown and will be used at times; but it will be obvious that in some instances this may be removed.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is A tooth member having an undercut socket, and a post having a terminal frusto-conical enlargement of a resilient nature so that it can be compressed and sprung into said socket.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
\VILLIS H. DWIGHT.
