TINTTEED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN J. TRESIDDER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO AMERICAN COLUMN GOM- PANY, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
CAP AND BASE FOR FIREPR-OOF COLUMNS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 5, 1912.
Application filed June 21, 1910, Serial No. 568,117. Renewed January 6, 1912. Serial No. 669,885.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN J. Tnnsmnun, a citizen of the United States of America, residing in New York, in the borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Caps and Bases for Fireproof Columns, of which the following is a specification.
.This invention relates to an improved cap or base for fireproof columns by which a strong and reliable connection of the cap or base with the steel shell and concrete filling is obtained; and for this purpose the invention consists of a cap or base for fireproof columns which is attached to the end of the steel shell by a shank that extends into the cap or base and is attached thereto by bolts or other means, the shell, hollow cap or base and shank being filled with concrete, as will be fully described hereinafter and finally pointed out in the claim.
Hereinafter the cap or base will be referred to simply as the cap, but it is under stood that this part may be used not only at the upper end of the column, but may also be used as a base at the lower end thereof.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a vertical central section through a fireproof column with my improved cap attached thereon, and Fig. 2 is also a vertical central section showing a modified construction of the connection of the cap with the column.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawing, a represents a steel shell, b the concrete filling of the same and c the cap end-piece for the column. Into the upper end of the column a is inserted a hollow shank (Z which is fitted by its lower portion into the upper end of the shell, its upper portion being offset inwardly, as shown clearly in the drawing. The upper portion of the shank (Z extends into the lower portion of the cap 0 and is attached thereto by outside headed bolts 6 and interior screw-nuts 6 while the cap 0 shown in Fig. 2 is attached to the shell a by providing the upper portion of the shank (P with a coarse screw-thread (Z and the lower portion of the cap 0 with an interior screw-thread which permits the screwing of the cap over the threaded upper portion of the shank d After the connection of the shank is made, the concrete filling b is poured into the cap, shank and shell so that the rigid connection between the parts is formed. By thus connecting the cap with the shell by the intermediate tubular shank, and by connecting the shank and cap together by the bolts c or by the threads (Z 0 and by locking or anchoring these parts in place by the concrete filling, a very simple and reliable cap or base connection with the fireproof column is obtained. As stated, the cap 0 may be secured to the lower end of the column, thereby forming an efficient and reliable base.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
In a fireproof column, the combination of a cylindrical steel shell, a shank having an upper reduced portion and an enlarged lower end fitting snugly in the upper end of the shell and forming internal and external shoulders even with the upper end of the shell, a cap snugly receiving said reduced portion and resting with its lower edge against said external shoulder and the upper edge of the shell, means for locking said reduced portion and said cap together, the ends of said shank terminating near the adjacent ends of said cap and shell respec tively, and a concrete filling in said cap, shank and shell and forming an anchorage engaging over the internal shoulder and ends of the shank.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention, I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN J. TRESIDDER. \Vitnesses PAUL Gonrnn, FANNIE FISK.
