UNITI-3D STATES PATENT p OFFICE.
WILLIAM P. SAMPSON, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO PIERRE S. BROWN, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI.
REIN-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 709,855, dated September 23, 1902.
Application filed May 22, 1902. Serial No. 108,568. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM P. SAMrsoN,a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rein-Holders and Clamp-Holders and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable 1o others to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
The-object of my invention is to provide a spring clamp or holder for the purpose of I5 securing or holding the reins or lines of a harness (when attached to a vehicle and when not in use) and to provide a graduated or limited clamp or holder which will rmly hold up to a certain pressure of resistance zo all substances placed between its arms by means of a new and novel construction and combination of two metal arms branching from a common base, so shaped and placed opposite each other and so constructed all 2 5 from a single piece of metal as to obtain equalizing and opposing pressure, securing in the action of the two arms the combined qualities both of a spring and a clamp; and it consists of the new and novel construction 3o of parts, such as will be more fully described and specifically pointed out in the claims. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings, Figure l is a view in perspective of my improvement in rein-holders and clamp-holders. Fig. 2 is an end View showing one of the bolts which secures the device to the dashboard or other portion of a vehicle or other object, as may be desired.
4o Fig. 3 is a detail view in perspective when in operation, showing the upper or outer springarmoverlapping the lower or inner springarm and the upper or outer spring-arm being secured to the body of the device by a staybolt or pin, which also prevents the reins or lines or other substance from passing beyond it. Fig. 3 also shows the four arms equidistant from each other and bent in a U-shaped form for the purpose of clamping to a dash- 5o board or other portion of a vehicle or other object.
Referring to the drawings, the letters A and A2, respectively, represent the upper (or outer) and the lower (or inner) spring-arms, between which the reins (or other object) C 5 5 are to be secured. These spring-arms consist of either at or half-oval narrow plates of suitable length and thickness extending from the base of the holder at either end and curved outwardly and inwardly until one 6o overlaps the other about two -thirds their length, the upper or outer end being slightly curved upward or outward for convenience or ready adjustment in placing the reinsor other object C between the arms. The inner or contact surfaces D of these spring-arms may be milled or corrugated for the purpose of greater security in preventing the reins C from slipping when placed therein.
In Fig. 3, E represents the four U-shaped 7o arms with holes F near their outer ends for the reception of bolts for the purpose of clamping to dashboard or other portion of a vehicle or other object. The upper or outer spring-arm A is provided with a hole (not shown) D about two-thirds its length distant from the end, through which a headed bolt or pin B passes, the lower (or inner) springarm A2 having a slotted or oblong hole (not shown) nearits outer end and directly beneath 8o the hole in the upper or outer spring-arm, which also receives said bolt B. Bolt B then passes into and through the base of the holder B2 and is riveted or otherwise securely fastened.
Having fully described my invention, what I now claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a rein or line, holder, the combination of a base-plate with four U-shaped arms 9o curved in U form equidistant from each other with holes near their outer ends in combination with two narrow spring-arms formed from a portion of the base-plate and extending from the ends of said base-plate and curved outwardly and back until one overlaps the other, the end of the outer lapped spring-arm being curved slightly upward or outward, a hole through both of said springn arms and a bolt or pin passing through both, roo
