NIITED STATES PATENT FFICF.
BENJAMIN J. HARTMAN, OF WOOS'IER, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO DAVID W. IMMEL, OF SAME PLACE.
GIG-SADDLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 319,484, dated June 9, 1885.
Application filed August 29, 1884. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN J. HARTMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at WVooster, in the county of \Vayne and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Gig- Saddle-Spring Fastener, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in gig-saddlespring fasteners for single'strap harness-saddles. Its object is to provide an improved device for uniting and holding together the several leather parts of a gigsaddle at the lower or outer ends of the pads. I attain this object by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a detached gig-saddle-spring fastener embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical'longitudinal section of the same on the line as m. Fig. 3 is a Vertical longitudinal section of one side of a gig-saddle out through the middle and on line 00 as, showing the relative position of the several parts of the saddle with reference to the spring and fastener.
Referring to the drawings, 1? is an ordinary gig-saddle spring, at the lower or outer end of which is attached my improved fastener,I:I, consisting of an upright shank, b, at right angles with the face of the spring, and an up wardly-projecting hook, a. Sis the cushion or pad of the saddle; A, the housing for the same. B is the skirt-strap. G is the bearerstrap. D is the loop to secure the bearer, and E is the upper saddle-plate,through which the ring F is secured to the upper end of the spring, as heretofore.
Gig-saddle-spring plates provided with a hook cast thereon have been heretofore used, but always in connection with an upper metal plate to hold the several leather parts of the saddle together upon the hook and pad.
My improvement lies in the situation and construction of a hook upon the pad-plate, in connection with an upper loop, in such a manner as to avoid not only the use of padscrews, but also of an upper metal plate to 5' unite and secure the several leather parts, as heretofore; and it consists in placing the hookfastener H at or near the lower end of the spring-plate P, and constructing it with an outwardly-projecting shank, b, of sufficient length to penetrate through the pad S and skirt-strap B, terminating with a thin, flat hook, at, at an angle with the shank b, and on a line with the face of the plate P, adapted to hold the skirt-strap down securely upon the housing of the pad. The bearer-strap 0 passes over and conceals this hook, and is held closely and firmly down upon it and the skirt by means of the loop D, which passes under the skirt-strap at the hook at. The several leather parts of the saddle are thus firmly and secure ly held together and fastened down upon the housing of the pad without the use of any outer metal plate or any pad-screws, as heretofore. By this device the leather parts of the saddle are easily and securely connected and fastened together at the lower or outer end of the pad, and a single-strap gig-saddle. produced which is superior in beauty, strength, and durability to any ever before invented.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a gig-saddle, the combination, with the pad S, of the spring-plate P, provided with a hook-fastener, H, at its lower end, constructed as shown, and loop D, the hook and loop adapted to unite the several leather parts and secure them upon the pad, without the use of pad-screws or any upper metal plate, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto set my hand this 22d day of June, A. D. 1884.
BENJAMIN J. HARTMAN.
