HYDROCARBON BURNER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 708,389, dated September 2., 1902. Application filed May 13,1902- Serial No, 107,135- (No model.)
To ctZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN W. NEUMANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hydrocarbon-Burners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to hydrocarbonburners; and the objects ofthe invention are to provide simple and effective means forinsuring the proper feed of the liquid fuel to the burner-tube or equivalent part and cleaning the feed-pipe without removing the same in case of obstruction.
The invention includes as one of its features the following elements in combination to wit, a liquid-fuel tank, a supply-pipe leading therefrom having a valve, and an airblast pipe connected with said supply-pipe between said valve and tank. The valve is supplemental to a main valve in the tank and can be operated to cut off the liquid between the tank and burner-tube in case of any accident to the main or feed-controlling valve, it being understood that the supplemental valve is in vthe nature of a safety one. By closing the supplemental or safety valve and opening the main or feed valve and directing a blast of air through the air-blast pipe any obstruction back of the junction of the air blast and supply pipes can be dislodged, so as to cause the proper feed of the liquid, and by shutting the feed-valve and opening the safety valve a blast from the mouthpiece clears the pipe leading to the burner-tube.
The invention of course is not limited to the making of the foregoing parts of any particular material nor their disposition or kind of any particular character, except as set forth in the claim appended to this description.
The invention may be used in various ways, it being shown in the accompanying drawing, which is a sectional side elevation, as incorporated in a cook-stove.

may be of any suitable kind using liquid hydrocarbon as its fuel, and it incloses in its firebox a burner-tube, neither of which is shown,
as they constitute no part of the present invention. To the rear side of the stove is suitably secured a bracket 2, sustaining the standard or framing 3 of a hydrocarbon-supply tank 4.
The supply-pipe 5 carries the liquid from the tank 4 to the burner-tube within the stove, said pipe being shown as being approximately of right angular form. The short vertical leg of the supply-pipe is connected to the tank in some suitable manner.
A main or feed valve 6 is situated in the tank 4, and the stem thereof extends upward from the same and is provided at its upper end with a hand-wheel 7, by which the main or feed valve can be readily operated. This valve controls the upper open end of the supply or feed pipe 5, and by opening the same the liquid fuel can enter the supplypipe to be conducted thereby to the burnertube in the stove for consumption.
The horizontal leg of the supply-pipe 5 is furnished with a supplemental or safety valve 8, which is normally open, but which can be shut in order to arrest the flow of the liquid fuel from the tank 4 to the stove 1 in case of any accident to the main valve or in case of any breakage between said supplemental or safety valve and tank 4.
A blast-pipe 9 is connected with the supply-pipe 5 at a place between the valve 8 and tank 4, and by it stoppages in the supplypipe 5 back of or above the valve 8 or at or around the main valve 6 can be removed by first closing the said supplemental or safety valve 8 and then directing a blast of air through such pipe 9, the main valve of course having been opened prior to their operation. The air-blast pipe 9 is substantially of L form and is simply a blast-pipe, the air to be furnished by applying the mouth to the mouthpiece at the upper end of this pipe and directing a blast of air therethrough.
The improvements of course can be used in any connection for insuring the feed of liquid fuel, as hereinbefore set forth, they being shown as incorporated in a cook-stove merely for the purpose of indicating their nature.
