IMPROVEMENT IN DISINFECTING SOAP-BOILING ESTABLISHMENTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 138,954, dated May 13, 1873; application filed May 8,1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STEPHEN STRUNz, of the city of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Disinfecting Soap-Boiling Establishments, of which the following is a specification:
Soap-making is one of the necessary arts of civilization and can be most cheaply conducted in cities and towns but from the, nature of the materials used certain offensive gases, not in very large quantities, are thrown off, which render such establishments nuisances in the neighborhood of dwellings.
The object of my invention is to destroy these offensive gases by a simple arrangement of devices so that no offensive gases can escape. In establishments of this kind it is generally necessary to have a steam-boiler and furnace. My invention consists in arranging over the soap boilers or kettles hoods,flues, and valves, so that all the gases arising from the kettles are by a draft and blast carried off and forced through or into the fire of the furnaces.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now more fully describe the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and letters of reference thereon.
The drawing represents the interior of a soap-boiling establishment.
In the drawing A represents a building, in which are arranged the kettles, boilers, and
other machinery for a soap-boiling establish ment. The main kettle or boiling-pan B is provided with a cover or hood, to the upper end of which is connected a vertical flue or pipe (J, extending nearly to' the ceiling. This fine has in its upper end a valve, to, for tightly closing the upper end of the flue, and when the material in the boiler is boiling the valve is generally closed. The vertical flue is connected by branch flues or pipes 11 c to the kettles or pans D and E, which may be also closed, but are generally open for drawing in additional air for the furnace. To the upper part of the vertical flue or pipe is attached the draft-flue (1, connecting with the fan F, by which the offensive gases and vapors arising from the boiling substances are forced directly under the grate-bars e of the furnace, but they may be forced into it at any other point, and are there entirely consumed and destroyed. The ash-pit may be firmly closed if desired.
If it is desired at any time to supply additional air to the furnace the valve a in the flue 0 may be opened, when all the gases and vapors near the ceiling are drawn int-o the furnace.
Instead of the fan-blower, an air-pump, steam-siphon and injector, or any suitable draft and blast devices may be employed to exhaust the offensive gases and vapors and force them intothe furnace.
I do not claim, broadly,the driving of offensive gases through a fire to consume them, as
devices for that purpose are known; but
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. The combination, with a soap-boilin g kettle or kettles, of a hood and flues, provided with one or more valves, and a blast apparatus, so as to take off and deliver to a furnace the gases and vapors, substantially as specified.
2. The method or system herein described for disinfecting soap-boiling establishments, the same consisting in attaching to the kettles collectors for gathering the gases, and combining therewith a blast or draft apparatus, so as to force the gases into or through a fire or furnace, substantially as specified.
