To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that T, @TEJPHEN A. DoUoLAs DUANE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Riverside, in the'county of San Juan, Territory of New Mexico, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Draft Appliances for Fireplaces; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to a draft appliance or attachment for heaters and more particularly to the class of draft appliances for use with open fireplaces.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a draft appliance in which a draft of air can be introduced below an open fire grate directly from the atmosphere so as to regulate and establish proper combus tion of material being burned and also to enable a uniform heat to issue fromthe fire 'into a room of a dwelling house or the like.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a draft appliance of this character in which a supply of air from the atmosphere is introduced into a fireplace below the grate therein so as to adord a plentiful supply of air for combustion and to enable a eneral and uniform issue of heat from the urning fire into a room, and means for .relgulating the supply of air into said fireace.
Another object of the invention is the provisionof a draft appliance of this character which can be readily and quickly positioned properly within a fireplace and that is simple in construction, thoroughly efficient in operation and inexpensive in the manufacture.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which disclose the preferred form of embodiment of the invention to enable those skilled in the art to practice the same and as brought out in the claim hereunto appended.
In the drawings :Figure 1 is a front elevation of a fireplace with its grate and the invention applied thereto. Fig; 2 ,is a sectional view on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a similar view with the draft appliance shown in side elevation. Fig. A is a front view on an enlarged scale showing the draft regulating door to the draft appliance. Fig. 5 is a sectional view of the draft tube look-- ing toward the inner end thereof and removed from the fireplace. Fig. 6 is a fragmentary sectional view on the line 6-ti of Fig. 5.
Similar reference characters indicate correspondng parts throughout the several views in the drawings.
in the drawings the numeral 8 designates a fireplace which is formed within one vertical wall 9 of a dwelling house and which fireplace is of the usual. or ordinary construction. At the rear and leading from the top ofthe fireplace vertically through the wall 9 is a main draft due 10, through which passes smoke, cinders and other foreign matter when the fire is burning within. the fireplace.
Mounted Within the fireplace and disposed a distance above the base thereof is a horizontally arranged fire grate ll'which is of the usual construction and is ada ted to support the material to be burne Beneath the fire grate 11 and disposed horizontally in the wall 9 is a suitable opening which latter receives a hollow cylindrical tube 12, the inner end of which leads at a central point to the space beneath said fire grate 11 and the opposite end thereof projects exteriorly of said wall and terminates in a flared mouth portion 13 to establish direct comrnunication between the space beneath the fire grate 11 and the atmosphere outside of a dwelling house so as to permit a current of air to pass through the said tube 12 into the space beneath the fire grate.
Secured to the inner end of the tube 12 1s a triangular shaped front plate 14, the lattercontacting with the outer face of the rear wall of the fireplace. Connected by a pivot- 15 to t e said front plate 14: is a swinging door 0 closure member 16, the same being of substantially elliptical shape and is adapted to close the inner open end of the draft tube 12 when desired. Projecting from the outer face near the opposite free end of said door 16 is a handle 17 to enable the said door to be shifted to an opened or closed position by an operator.
Projecting inwardly from the inner face of the door 16 near its free end and integral therewith is an l.-'shaped catch member or lug 18, which is adapted to engage one edge of the front plate 14: to hold the said door in close relation to the said front plate and -to (permit the door to be swung to opened closedpositions and also to permit it to be moved to any desired degree intermediate the latter and thereby regulate the degree of opening of the draft tube which will per- I mit a predetermined amount of atmospheric the space below the fire grate can be regulated to increase or decrease the draft of the fireplace and in this manner establish the proper combustion and also enable the issuance of a uniform heat from the fire to the interior of the room to be heated.
What is claimed is':
The combination with a fireplace and its grate arranged above the base thereof to form a space beneath the grate, of a draft tube forming communicatlon between the atmosphere and the space beneath the grate and having a flared outer mouth portion, a triangular shaped plate mounted at the opposite end of the draft tube, an elliptical shaped closure member pivoted at one end to said front plate, a catch member secured to the opposite end of the closure member and adapted to engage one edge of said plate to hold said closure member in closed posi- 1 tion, and a handle member on said closure member.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
