MARSHALL BROWNE IIERN, OF BIRMINGHAM, ENGLAND,'ASSIGNOR TO JOHN IIERN AND MARIA'JIERN, OF
MANCHESTER, ENGLAND.
; TOBACCO-PIPE.
SPECIFICATION forming-"part of Letters Patent No. 708,142, dated September 2, 1902.
Application filed March28,1902. Serial No- IOOASZ. (No model.)
5 Chambers,'89 Corporation street, in the city of Birmingham, England,.have invented certain new and useful Improvements Relating to Tobacco-Pipes, (for which I have filed an application in Great Britain, No. 17,527, hearing date September 2, mp1,) of which the following is a specification.
This invention consists'of improvements relating to tobacco-pipes, whereby I am enabled in a simple and convenient manner to protect the tobacco in the pipe bowlfrom contact with stem or smoke-passages, and thus to effect an economy in the amount of tobacco consumed and also to provide for the cooling of the smoke and for the ready and effectual cleaning of the whole interior of the pipe.
Referring to the accompanying sheet of ex planatory drawings, Figure 1 is anexternal elevation, and Fig. 2 apart-sectional elevation, of a pipe constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 3 is a plan showing the bowl end of the pipe,'bntwith its innerand cap part removed. Fig. 4 is an elevation of the said inner and cap part of the bowl.
The same reference-letters in the difierent views indicate the same parts.
The bowl consists of two main parts, aninner and cap part A and a top body part B, which is formed with the usual stem 0. The mouthpiece D is detachably connected with the outer end of the said stem in any ordinary manner.
- The inner and cap ed, asshown at Fig. thread is formed within the body part B of the bowl. The part A can thus be readily fitted within or detached from the part B.
The part A is provided with a lining, as F,
of meerschaum'or other material, to protect it from the heat generated by the burningof the tobacco placed within it. p
The central aperturewithin the bowl part B is of such depth that when the part A is 4 secured within the'said aperture until its annular shoulder a is drawn tightly against the top of the part B a sump or moisture-collectpart A is screw-threadtobacco is protected from the 4, and a corresponding ing chamber F is provided between the connected parts; I preferablyinsert a piece, as F, of sponge or other absorbent material, in the bottom of the sump. I also preferably place a thin metal washer, as A, beneath the annular shoulder a to prevent its adhesion to the part B. The interior of the bowl part A communicates with the aforesaid sump or collecting-chamber F by means of the passage a', and the said chamber is also connected by means of the passage b with an annular groove 1), formed around the top of the body part B of the bowl. The said groove also communicates by way of the passage b with the-central aperture 0 in the stem 0.
The course taken by the smoke under the drawing action of the person using the pipe is as follows: From the interior of the inner bowl part A the smoke passes through the passage 0. to the sump F and from thence by the passage 1) to the annular groove 1). After traveling around one semicircular portion of the said groove in either. direction the smoke descends through the passage b to the central aperture 0 in the stem 0, and from thence it passes out by way of the central passage formed through the mouthpiece D.
With a pipe constructed as aforesaid the moisture which accumulates during smoking, while the smoke is cooled before entering the mouth of the smoker through having to take a circuitous course through'passages which, with the whole interior of the pipe, can eflfectually cleaned.
Having thus described my invention, what -I' claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is p 1 1. In a tobacco-pipe, the combination con- 90 sisting of an outer bowl part B having an'annular groove-b on its upper end and diametrically-opposed passages b b throu gh' its body respectively putting the said annular groove into communication with a sump]? at the bot- 5 be very readily and up around its exte- 10o 2. In a tobacco-pipe, sisling of an outer bowl nular groove b in its upper end and diametrically-opposed passages I) b through its body respectively putting the said annular groove into communication with a sump F at the bottom of B with the aperture 0 in the pipe-stem (J, an inner bowl part A detachably connected with B and communicating with the sump F in the same but preventing: the smoke from flowing up around its exterior and thence di- 1 the combination con- I part B having an anpassage b and a metal 7 between the said parks A nd I to prevent their adhesion, substantially 3 described. 15
In witness whereof I-have hereunto and in presence of two Witnesses.
