TO ALL WIIOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, THOMAS SHAW, of the city and county of Philadelphia,Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Aimproved Mode of Constructing Chain; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of'the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and the letters of reference marked thereon. l
My inventionl consists in the shaping of a link so that it can be cast into shape, and in vconstructing it of such a shape that one link will lock into another and form a complete cog-chain, without riveting or forging, as hereafter described.
In order to enable others to use and'practise my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
On reference to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of the specification, the sketch representsa view of three links of said chain, of which- Figure 1 is a back view, or thc part which would come in contact with a cog-wheel. Figure 2 is an edge view of' the links, showing their general shape, and how they lock into each other. Similar letters refer to similar parts. Y .A a represents the links, of which is thebearing part, a broad piece of m`etal terminating in ahook at each end. e is a rib, projecting from the middle of'one side of said hooked part b, and lits loosely into a corresponding slot, r2, of another link. t Said rib c has on its outer edge a part that projects beyond, forming a right-angled corner, as indicated in fig. 2. The object 'of' rib c andlits projecting corner is, that the rib fitting into slot d prevents the links from sliding apart laterally, and that the projecting corner is to prevent the links from unlocking when they are so far bent on the joint as to cause the links to be arrested at this peint. The furtherl object of said rib .e is that the several ribs of link of chain will't into a groove in the middle of the chain cogl wheel, and thus prevent its' slipping od' the wheel.
The object of this chain is chcapness, strength, and durability. It will be observed that they can be cast of iron, steel, or brass, and that they need simply be'hooked together when cast to form the chain, and that they will not unhook themselves when passing over pulleys.
The shape might be slightly modilied without any alteration of the result. v What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is 'lhe chain-links, asvconstructed, for the purpose specified.
