No. 707,258. Patented Aug. 19, 1902.

LEG 'IMPBOVEB. (Application filed Mar. 13, 1902.)
(No Model.)
A TTORNE Y.
% WITNESSES UNITED STATES- YP ATENT OF IC HARRY A. RHONEMUS, on SPRINGFIELD, oIIIo, ASSIGNOR TO s. F. RIIONEMUS, or SPRINGFIELD, OHIO.
LEG-IMPR OVER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 707,258, dated August 19, 1902.
Application filed March 13, 1902. Serial No. 98,028. (No model.)
I them to present a normal and shapely appearance.
To this end my invention consists in certain novel features which I will now proceed to describe and will then particularly point out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side View illustrating the application of my device; Fig. 2, a front view ofthe same; Fig. 3, a face view of the device detached, illustrating its use with another form of garter; Fig. 4, an edge view, and Fig. 5 a plan or top View.
My improved device consists of a sheet of substantially rigid material, such as sheet metal-that is to say,of a material suiiiciently rigid to maintain its normal shape under ordinary strains and to resume said shape after such strains. It is concavo-convex in transverse section to fit the side of the leg and of a length sufficient to extend from a point slightly above or on a level with the knee to a point below the knee, thus bridging or spanning the hollow at the knee, which it is desired to conceal. It is substantially straight from top to bottom and of decreasing width toward its front end to lit the leg. In order to secure the device in place,I provide therein near the upper end apertures 2, through which are passed the cords or elastics 3 of a garter-- 4., having a main portion passing around the leg between the calf'and knee, while the cords or elastics 3 form a depending portion which is adapted to be connected to the top of the sock or hose 5. The lower end of the device is preferably inserted between the top of the sock and the leg, so that the sock, which is held up by the garter, serves to hold the lower end of the shield in position, while the upper end is also held in position by the garter.
Various forms of garter may be employed to hold in place the upper end of the device, and in Fig. 3 I have shown the same as employed in connect-ion with another well-known form of garter 5,"in which the cords 3 are dispensed with, the body of the garter passing through a larger aperture 6 in the device.
The apertures Zand 6 are preferably provided with eyelets.7,by means of which their margins are strengthenedand protected, while at the same time a smooth surface is provided to prevent wear of the garter.
The substantially rigid body of the device bridges and covers the hollow at the knee and conceals the same at all times, giving the leg a shapely normal appearance.
Having thus fully described my invention, whatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. Aleg-improver consistingof an elongated concavo-convex sheet of substantially rigid material, straight longitudinally, and extending along the side of the leg from a point slightly above or in line with the knee to a point below the same, being shaped to fit against the side of the lower leg and extend over the hollow at the side of the knee, and means for securing the same to theleg, substantially as described. a
2. Aleg-improver consisting of an apertured, elongated, concavo-convex sheet of substantially rigid material, straight longitudinally, extending along the side of the leg from a point slightly above or in line with the knee to a point below the same, and provided with an aperture, being shaped to fit against the side of the lower leg and extend over the hollow at the side of the knee, and a retaining device consisting of a flexible band or garter connected with said apertured sheet and fastening around the leg, substantially as described.
3. A leg-improver consisting of an apertured, elongated, concav ooonvex sheet of substantially rigid material, straight longitudinally, extending along the side of the leg from a point slightly above or in line with the knee to a point below the same, and provided '2 tome with an aperture near its top, its lower end In testimony whereof I afidx my signature being adapted to be inserted between the sock in presence of two Witnesses. and leg, and a retaining device consisting of s 7' a flexible band or garter connected with said HARR RHONEMUS' apertured sheet, fastening around the1eg,and Witnesses: having a depending portion to engage and E. O. HAGAN, support the sock, substantially as described. IRVINE MILLER.
