Be it known that I, ROBERT N. CARSON, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco,State of California, have invented an Improvement in Gloves; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same. l

My invention relates to improvements in gloves; and it consists of the parts and the construction and arrangement of parts forming the glove, as I will hereinafter describe and claim.

In the construction of gloves such as are used by railroad brakenlen, drivers, and those whose work requires that they wear gloves in handling rough, heavy, or hot substances I am not aware of any structure in which the seam of the thumb is so disposed as to carry it entirely away from the inner surface upon which the wear takes place.

It is the object of my invention to so construct the thumb-piece that the seam is carried to the rear and along the outer linecf the thumb.

It also consists in so cutting the gouge or opening which unites the thumb to the palm that the inside seam joining the thumb to the palm is carried well up into the angle of the first joint of the thumb and above the ball or fleshy portion,` thus reducing the wear upon this seam. In addition the seam is double-stitched and an independent reinforcing-strip covers theseam. The thumb portion may also'be soV cut asto extend down into the palm and over the base or ball of the thumb which is covered by that portion of the palm.

In cutting the leather for a glove of my invention the back, fingers, and outside of the glove are not materially different from those at present in use. The palm A has what is called the thumb-gouge cut in it, as shown .and it also carries the seam so high up that `it is not subjected to the Wear caused by grasping substances, the line of the seam being Well out of the Way of such wear. The thumb portion is cut in a single piece, of a shape and form as shown in Fig. l. The part which forms the tip of the thumb is cut with an intermediate notch f3 between the parts Land 5, which represent, respectively, the back and inner or front portion of the thumb. The small back portion Liis. slightly shorter thanthe front part which covers the inside of theV thumb, and when this is closed and stitched together the seam will commence about on the root yand inner angle of the thumb-nail and approximately following the curvature of the nail, so as to be well back of the portion of the thumb which is subjected to wear, it follows down the outside of the thumb in the same line to the wrist portion, or the seam could stop at the lineof the gouge nearest to the wrist. To provide for this seam,thisside is extended down,as shown, in cutting the part above referred to,as shown at 6. The inner side of the base is cut in convex interior curves, as at 7-9, which when the thumb is joined to the palm forms the seam extending around the outside of the base of the thumb, thence around the inside and in line with the bend at the second joint or the one Where the thumb joins the fleshy portion of the palm at the base of the thumb. This line of the seam is high up and so within the joint and coincident with,Y it thatit is subjected to little or no wear.` The palm portion A extends Well up overthis ieshy mount at the base of the thumb and is united with the thumb portion on the line before described and the two overlapping may be double-stitched along this line. ciding with the inner part 5 may either terminate beneath this seam and the reinforce 8 or it may be extended, being cut, as shown at 9, so that it extends down over the seam covering the fleshy portion of the palm which is formed at the base of the thumb, thus forming a continuous reinforce, stitched within the palm by a double line of stitching, as at l0. In this construction that portion 9 of the inner part of the thumb is carried down into the palm without the seam around the base of the thumb; but the reinforce-strip 8 may be extended over this portion, asbefore described.

It will be understood that the various seams may be stitched single or double, that rivets may be used either alone or in conjunction with the stitching without altering the character of the invention, this being within the province of the manufacturer.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The combination in aglove of a palm portion having the concavo-convex gouge for the thumb cut so as to coincide approximately as the inside of the joint at the base of the thumb, a thumb composed of a piece of leather cut 'with a notch in the tip separating it into parts, one of which is approXimatelyone-third the size of the other, and has its outer edge extending downwardly so that when stitched together the line of the seam approximately follows the curvature of the thumb-nail from the interior to its base, thence down the outside toward the wrist, and theinterior of the base portion being cut in convex curves whereby it unites with the palm portion when fitted thereto on the aforesaid line of the thumbjoint, said thumb portion and palm portion overlapping and double-seamed, and a supplemental reinforcing-strip secured over the said seam at the base of the thumb.

2. The combination in a glove of the palm portion having a thumb-gouge cut in concavoconvex form, and a single thumb-piece cut with a notch in its outer end, dividing it into two parts, one of which is approximately onethird the size of the other and slightly shorter whereby when united a seam is formed following approximately the line of the thumbnail, the exterior edges of said thumb-piece being extended downwardly and having a notch formed between said downwardly-extending portions with convex sides whereby the outer and narrower portions form the line of the outside seam, and the extension of the wider portion underlaps the palm, reinforcing that portion which covers the base of the thumb.

3; The combination in a glove of the palm portion having a concavo-convex gouge to receive the thumb, a thumb formed of a single piece cut with the narrower and wider sections separated by a notch at the tip, and having the outside lines extending downward and a notch also formed in the opposite end whereby when stitched together and into the thumbgouge, the narrower portion forms the back of the thumb, the wider portion covers the entire interior of the thumb back to the line of the thumb-nail, the meeting outer edges uniting to form a seam on the outside of the thumb extending downwardly toward the wrist, and the curved lines at the base of the thumb portion forming the seam by which the thumb portion is united to the back and palm on the line of the joint at the base ot' the thumb, and a supplemental reinforcingstrip secured over said seam along the inside of the thumb.
