Letters Patent No. 70,663, dated November 5, 1867.
turnover BED-BOTTOM.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, J. W. WILDER, of theA city, county, and State of NewYork, have invented a new and improved Spring-Bottom for Beds, Seats, etc.; and Iy do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and l exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference beingy had to the accompanying drawings, forming part ot this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a plan or top view of this invention.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of ,the same.

This inventionl relates to a spring-bottom, which is applicable to beds, seats of chairs, lounges, sofas, or
any other article to which a spring-bottom may be applied.
It consists of a series of springs, which are enclosed in tubes, and .acted ou by plungers with large heads, on which.th`e cushion, mattress, or other article is placed, either directly or with intervening slats, in such a manner that by the heads the cushion is vpreserved, fromrbeing injured by the springs; and furthermore, the springs, by being enclosed in tubes, are prevented from tilting over, and consequently they are enabled to retain their power and elasticity for a long time. The tubes which enclose the springs are secured to a frame, the four corners of which are provided with plungers, fitting into tubes containing springs, in such a manner that the entire frame is rendered yielding, andan additional elasticity is imparted to the spring-bottom.
A represents a. frame, composed of a series of longitudinal slats a and transverse slats b, which are united in any suitable manner. The slats composing this frame are provided with a number of sockets to receive the tubes c, whichenclose the springs d. Said tubes are made of metal or any other suitable material, and they are open on top and closed at the'bottom, so that the springs can be readily dropped into them.l The springs are made of metal wire, ordinary spiral springs being used by preference,- or they'may be made of any other suitable material; and their length or heightis such that when the same are inserted in the tubes e, room is left for the lower ends of the 'pluugers c. These plungers are made of wood or any other suitable material, and they are placed loosely on the springs, as clearly shown in iig. 2 of the drawing. The upper ends of said plungers are provided with round heads, which may be made of any suitable size, and which serve to'support the cushion or mattress. Instead 0f placing the cushion or mattress directly on the heads ofthe plungers e, a frame, `l), may be interposed, which is provided with ilexihle or elastic slats, or with a net-work-ofwebbing, and in this case the heads of the plungers may be made quite small; but if the intermediate frame-isinot used, the heads of the plungers must he made suilciently large to present a good bearing surface, and they may be made as large as the space between themwill permit. In either case, that is to say, whether the intermediate framed) be used or not, the springs are-prevented from wearing out the ,covering of the cushion.- By the tubes the springs are always kept in an upright position, 'and they are prevented from tilting over, and the plungers can be readily so arranged` that the same do not allow of compressing the springs beyond a certain point, so that the same will retain their elasticity for a long time. It desired, the plungers e might be secured to the frame A, and the tubes so arranged that they support the intermediate frame D, or'th'e cushionor mattress.
This arrangement I consider an equivalent of the arrangement above set forth. The frame is provided at i its corners with plungcrs g, which work in tubes t, secured to the bedstead, or to the main frame of the fumiture in which my bottom is to be used. Said tubes contain springs z', of India'rubber or other suitable material, and by these means the frame A is rendered yielding, and the elasticity of the spring-bottoni is materially increased.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The spring-bed bottom, constructed as described,.consisting of the rectangular frame A, the slats a b, which are provided with metallic tubes c, enclosing springs al, which support the plungers e, having rounded heads, upon which thc flexible slats .of the rectangular frame D rest, substantially as described, for the purpose specied. A
The above specification of my invention `signed by me this 23d day of- July, 1866.
i J'. W. WILDER.
