Description

UNITED sTATEs PATENT oEEioE.
HERRMANN JURY, OF NEW' YORK, N. Y.
SPRING-MATTRESS.
Speecation of Letters Patent No. 29,600, dated August 14, 1860.
T o all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERRMANN JURY, of the city, county, 'and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Spring- Mattress; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making part of this specification, in which- Figures l and 4 are horizontal views of my spring mattress. F ig. 2 is a vertical view of the same; Fig. 3, a horizontal section of the joint and joint-fastening of the spring mattress.
rIhe same letters refer to the same parts in all the figures.
My improvement consists in combining horizontal wire frames in such a manner with vertical spiral springs, as to form a spring mattress capable of being used alike on the upper or lower side.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my improvement, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
In the annexed drawing A represents the spring.
B, B represent parts of the wire frame connected with each other and with the springs by means of fastenings D, D, formed of thin metallic clasps or plates, which inclose the joint tightly, and the upper and lower plate of the fastening are either riveted or pinned by means of two pins e e.
The frame consists of two principal parts, the upper part B, B, B and the lower part (being parallel with the upper one) B B B. Each of these parts is made of cells B, B, B, forming octagonal, square or any other suitable geometrical figure, and each of the spiral springs A, A, A, is connected with one cell of the upper part of the frame, and with the corresponding cell of the lower part of the frame in such a manner, that the upper end of the spring is fastened to the upper cell and the lower end of the spring to the lower cell, and the joints formed between the different cells and between the cells and the ends of the springs are united by means of the clasps D, D, D. Thus Fig. 3 represents the joint of a cell l), with another cell a, a, the continuation of which will form the spiral spring.
The frame as shown in Fig. 1, consists of octagons 7c, m, a, r, s, t, u, o, which when properly connected will leave squares if, u, fw, which are not intended to inclose springs, but serve to strengthen the whole frame.
The frame as shown in Fig. t consists of square cells, admitting of a more simple construction, but forming a frame less flexible and strong than that of Fig. 1.
The spring mattress thus formed loses the rigidity of the spring mattresses ot the usual construction and can therefore be used on the upper side as well as on the lower; for the same reason the spring mattress described is also applicable, to holsters, side pillows, head pillows, movable (and other) seats and sofa mattresses.
This spring mattress, is more elastic, than the usual spring mattresses; it admits of an easier handling, it is softer to the touch, it requires no tape, rope, or sewing-in of the springs, and is more durable than the usual spring mattresses.
Having described my invention, what I claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In the manufacture of mattresses, sofas, &c., the arrangement of wire frame cells, and springs A, in combination with smooth fastening plates D, D, in the manner described and for the double purpose of increasing the flexibility of the'wire frame and obviating the necessity of cord or wire bindings as set forth.
