SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.A 703,981, dated July 8, 1902. Application iiled April 14, 1902. Serial No. 102,696. (No model.)
. To all whom, t 1mi/.y concern,.-
Beit known that I, CASPER BLOOMBERG, a citizen of the United States, residing in New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Suspender-l larly described.
During the warmer seasons the vest or waistcoat is often dispensed with as an article of wear on account of the discomfort` it produces, and Suspenders are also frequently dispensed with for the same reason, some persons preferring not to use any eXtra support for the trousers, While others employ waistbelts for the purpose. Many persons, however, prefer the use of Suspenders by which to bring the weight of the trousers upon the shoulders, and yet for esthetical reasons they continue the use of the vest or waistcoat on account of the untidy eect produced by the suspender-ends, which as ordinarily made become exposed more or less in use.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide a garment-suspender fully equal to the ordinary demands thereof, but which is intended more especially for neglige purposes to be Worn when the Vest or waistcoat is left off or temporarily dispensed with.
The invention also has for its object to provide the suspender-end of special form well adapted to the uses and requirements thereof and also to simplify the construction and cheapen the cost of manufacture of said element as compared with other similar elements hitherto devised with like ends in View.
The above and additional objects are attained by means substantially such as are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a View of a trousers-suspender embodying my present improvements. Fig. 2 is an enlarged View in detail of va portion of the suspender, showing the inner side of the attached suspender-end. Fig. 3 is a similar view looking at the attached suspender-end from the outer side thereof. Fig. 4: is a vertical sectional View on the line 0c Fig. Before proceeding wit-l1 a more detailed description it may be stated that I provide the Suspenders of any suitable construction and with any preferred means of adjustment as to length; but instead of using the ordinary suspender-end having duplicate members or buttonhole-tabs I provide a suspender-end consisting, preferably, of a single member or buttonhole-tab only, the purpose being to have but one point of attachment to each side of the trousers at the front thereof, as will appear. By the use of a suspender-end thus constructed the trousers-button to which attachment is made may be secured to the `waistband of the trousers Well to the side thereof, and thus the suspender-end will be less liable to become exposed while in use. I am Well aware that it is not new, broadly, to provide a suspender-end having but a single member or buttonhole-tab; but inasmuch as practically double work is required of such y an element, due to extra weight and strain imposed thereon, it has often been difficult (especially with the'ner grades of goods) to construct the same-in a manner to combine ters marked thereon, A A each represents a shoulder-strap of an ordinary trousers-suspender, the two said straps being joined at d, as usual, and each having at the front portion thereof a suspender-end B, constructed in accordance with my present improvements, said shoulder-straps each also being provided, at the end of the rear portion thereof, with a suspender-end C, embodying my improvements to some extent. Each of the said suspenderends B comprises but a single member or tab, as shown, formed thereinwith a buttonhole b, by which attachment of the member or tab may be made to a button secured to the waistband of an ordinary pair' of trousers at any suitable point. Inasmuch as the suspender-end must be strong and capable of withstanding considerable Weight and strain, I prefer to construct the same substantially of equal width with the suspender-strap A IOO and also to furnish'a bearing therefor of great extent. Thus, as shown, I construct the suspender-end comparatively* short and of the desired shape or form, leather or other suitable fabric being preferably employed in the manufacture thereof, and said suspenderend is doubled over upon itself at the upper part thereof to form a loop c, by which attachment is made to one member of the metallic connector d, the other parallel member of said connector' being held in the loop e, formed by the turned-up portion f of the suspender-strap. It Will be seen that the loop c of the suspender-end extends the full length of said connector d, the said suspender-end being capable of moving with or upon the connector, and it will also be seen that the upper part of the suspender-end is considerably strengthened and reinforced by the folded portion or ap g thereof. As shown in Fig. 2, the said reinforcing-nap gis substantially hemispherical in shape, and the same is secured to the front or outer portion of the device by a horizontal line of stitching fi, joined at the ends by a stitching m, following the direction of the curved or rounded edge n of the said portion or flap g. As thus formed and secured the suspender-end is comparatively strong yet light in Weight, and it will be seen that a portion of the curved edge of the reinforcing portion or flap q crosses the said suspender-end in close proximity to the buttonhole b therein, thus serving to prevent enlargement or elongation of said buttonhole, which might otherwise result from the frequency with which the suspender-end maybe attached to and detached from the trousers-button. This is a very irnpo-rtant feature of my present improvement, and it may be added that the stitchingm also furnishes additional strength and security to the buttonhole in the use of the suspenderenrl ,in the ordinary Way.
My improved device or suspender-end is easily and quickly made, and it will be seen that the same has an extended bearing or sup*- port upon the connector d, which unites the device tothe suspender-strap A.
The construction liferein shown and described has special advantages in that type of suspender-end comprising a member or tab of leather or like material in which the buttonhole is formed by a simple slit minus any reinforce at the edges thereof, such as may conveniently be employed with tabs of Isuspender-ends form'ed'of textile material. In such type (leather) of buttonhole-tab the buttonhole is liable to become extended or elongated at the upper end thereof, duenot so much to the Weight imposed upon the suspenders as to the twisting strain exerted in the frequent attachment to and detachment from the buttons of the trousers, and by having the edge n of the reinforce g cross the tab in close proximity to the upper end of buttonhole Z2 the latter is less liable to be torn or enlarged from the causes mentioned. The
saidbuttonhole extends practically the full length of the more iiexible portion of the suspender-end, and it Will be understood that the portion of the latter to which the reinforcing-Hap is applied is rendered sti' and less liable to crinkle or buckle up on the connector d from any cause. Thus the construction and organization of the parts of my improved suspender end are more n clearly brought out, and the advantages thereof are more apparent. It Will also be seen that great strength and durabilityr are to be had therefrom.
I am not limited to the precise details of construction herein described and shown, since variations thereof may be adopted in practice and still be within the scope of my invention.
Having described my invention, I claim- 1. A suspender for trousers comprising a shoulder-strap looped at the end and having loosely held in the loop a connector, a suspender-end the Width of the upper end of which substantially equalsthe Width of said connector, said suspenderend being constructed of a single member or tab slitted to form a buttonhole and provided with a reinforcin g-iiap at the upper end thereof, the edge of said flap crossing thetab in close proximity to the upper end of said buttonhole and the flap being stitched to the tab also in close proximity to said upper end of the buttonhole, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A suspender for trousers comprising a shoulder-strap looped at the end and` having loosely held in the loop a connector, a suspender-end the Widthfof the upper end of Which substantially equals the Width of said v connector, said suspender end being constructed of a single member or tab folded over at its upper end yfor connection to said cong nector and slitted to form a buttonhole, and I provided with a reinforcing-flap at the upper end thereof, the edge of said flap crossing the i tab in close proximity to the upper end of said buttonhole and theflap being stitched to the tab also in close proximity to said upper end 5 of the buttonhole, as and for the purpose set forth.
` 3. A suspender for trousers comprising a` l shoulder-strap looped at the end and having loosely held in the loop a connector, a suspender-end the Width of the upper end of which substantially equals the Width of said connector and Which upper end is folded over and stitched to fit the loop, saidfsuspenderend being constructed of a single member or tab slitted to form a buttonhole and also having a reinforcingflap substantially hemispherical in form secured to the tab by stitching which crosses tho tab in close proximity to the upper end of said buttonhole.
