TOY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 703,931, dated July 1, 1902. Application filed Tune 26, 1901- Serial No. 66,143. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that LHATTIE J ENSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at and whose post-ofiice address is Canal Light Station,Sturgeon Bay, in the county of Door and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to toys; and the primary object thereof is to provide an inexpensive and simple device which will be capable of affording amusement to children.
With this object in view my invention consists in a handle having a bifurcated extension providing a pair of arms, a driving-shaft journaled at the inner end of the extension and provided with a crank having an operating-handle, a pulley having a concave groove and fixed to the driving-shaft between the arms, a driven shaft journaled at the outer end of the extension and formed with a crank at each end projecting in opposite directions, a projection on each crank parallel with the driven shaft and an inbent guiding end on each projection, a pulley having a concave groove and fixed to the driven-shaft between the arms, a belt connecting the pulleys, and jointed figures having arms fastened to the projections, so as to turn therewith and to fold thereover, as hereinafter described.
In order that my invention may be fully understood, I will proceed to describe it with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which the figure represents a front elevation of a toy constructed in accordance with my invention.
Referring now to the drawing, 1 designates a handle provided at one end with a bifurcated extension to form a pair of arms 2 and 3. A driven shaft 4 is journaled in the free end of said arms and on each end is formed into oppositely-disposed cranks 5 and 6, having projections 5 6 parallel with the driven shaft and inbent guiding ends 5 5.
7 and 8 designate jointed figures, either fan- I ciful or grotesque, having their arms fastened to the crank projections, and are designed to assume amusing postures when the shaft 4 is rotated.
9 designates a pulley having a concave 5o groove and keyed to the driven shaft 4 and positioned intermediate the arms 2 and 3. A similar pulley 10 has a concave groove and is journaled intermediate the arms 2 and 3 at a point adjacent to the handle 1 and is adapted to be operated by a crank 11, having an operating-handle 11 and connected to a driving-shaft 11 ,on which the pulley 10 is secured.
When the crank 11 is operated, the shaft 4: will be similarly controlled through the medium of an endless belt 12, which passes around the pulleys 9 and 10.
As the shaft 4 is rotated or controlled to oscillate the cranks 5 and 6 it is obvious that the jointed figures may be made to assume very amusing appearances.
It will thus be seen that a toy constructed in accordance with my invention will not only be cheap and simple in construction, but will be capable of affording unlimited amusement when properly handled.
I claim A toy comprising a handle having a bifurcated extension providing a pair of arms, a driving-shaft journaled at the inner end of the extension and provided with a crank having an operating-handle, a pulley fixed to the drivingshaft between the arms, a driven shaft journaled at the outer end of the extension and formed with a crank at each end projecting in opposite directions, a projection on each crank parallel with the driven shaft, and an inbent guiding end on each projec tion, a pulley fixed to the driven shaft between the arms, a belt connecting the pulleys, and jointed figures having arms fastened to the projections so as to turn therewith and to fold thereover.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses,
HATTIE JENSON.
