Definitions
- 1 designates a base or support, from which arises a pair of vertical frame, members or standards 2, which afford bearing at their upper ends for a driveshaft 3 and between their ends for a crankshaft 4, having an eccentric portion or crank 5, there being fixed upon one end of the crank-shaft a spool or drum 6, adapted for the reception of a flexible operating element or cord 7 and a gear-Wheel 8 in mesh with a pinion 9, fixed upon one end of the driveshaft 3, there being fixed upon the other end of said shaft a weighted fly-Wheel 10.
- the device is operated by winding the line 7 upon and drawing it quickly and forcibly from the spool 6, thus imparting a rapid rotary motion to the shaft 4, this motion being transmitted through the gear and pinion 9 to the shaft 3, while at the same time motion is imparted to the figure 11., as above mentioned,-through the medium of the crank 5 and link 13. It is to be particularly observed that the relative size of the gear and pinion are such that the speed of shaft 4 will be greatly multiplied through the shaft 3 and that the motion of the latter having been activateated will be continued owing to the momentum of the weighted fly-wheel 10, and thus continue to drive shaft 4 for effecting movement of the figure 11.

Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 15, 1906.
Application filed May 17, 1905. $e1'ia11l0. 260,829.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SETH M. HALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lockport, in the county of Niagara and State of N ewYork, have invented new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to toys of the type in which a movable figure representing a novel feature of a wild western horse known as the bucking broncho is mechanically operated, and has for its objects to produce a comparatively simple inexpensive device of this character which may be readily operated and one wherein a pitching motion will be imparted to the figure through the medium of a simplified driving mechanism.
To these ends the invention comprises the novel features of construction and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a toy embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same, partly in section.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a base or support, from which arises a pair of vertical frame, members or standards 2, which afford bearing at their upper ends for a driveshaft 3 and between their ends for a crankshaft 4, having an eccentric portion or crank 5, there being fixed upon one end of the crank-shaft a spool or drum 6, adapted for the reception of a flexible operating element or cord 7 and a gear-Wheel 8 in mesh with a pinion 9, fixed upon one end of the driveshaft 3, there being fixed upon the other end of said shaft a weighted fly-Wheel 10.
Pivoted upon the shaft 3 is a movable figure 11, preferably made in imitation of a bucking broncho, on which is mounted a rider 12 in the form of a cowboy or rough rider, which sets upon a typical western saddle 15, there being fixed to the figure 11 a vertically-depending rigid arm or link 13, provided with a longitudinally-extending slot or guideway 14, designed for the reception of the eccentric portion 5 of the shaft 4, Whereby rotation of the latter will impart to the horse a pitching motion upon the shaft 3.
The device is operated by winding the line 7 upon and drawing it quickly and forcibly from the spool 6, thus imparting a rapid rotary motion to the shaft 4, this motion being transmitted through the gear and pinion 9 to the shaft 3, while at the same time motion is imparted to the figure 11., as above mentioned,-through the medium of the crank 5 and link 13. It is to be particularly observed that the relative size of the gear and pinion are such that the speed of shaft 4 will be greatly multiplied through the shaft 3 and that the motion of the latter having been inaugurated will be continued owing to the momentum of the weighted fly-wheel 10, and thus continue to drive shaft 4 for effecting movement of the figure 11.
From the foregoing it is apparent that I produce an efficient device which will afford considerable harmless amusement, one in which the movements of the figure will be in imitation of a novel feature of the wild western horse which is known as a bucking broncho with a cowboy or rough rider upon its back who sits in a typical Western saddle, and one wherein the operating mechanism is of a simplified nature and the number of its component parts reduced to a minimum, thus ren dering the device inexpensive and free from liability of becoming disordered. In attain ing these ends it is to be understood that minor changes in the details herein set forth may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is
In a toy, a frame, a drive-shaft journaled therein, a figure pivoted for oscillation on the drive-shaft, an arm attached to and projecting from the figure and having a longitudinal slot, a crankshaft journaled in the frame and having its crank portion arranged in the slot, a pinion-and-gear connection between the crank and drive shafts, a weighted fiy-wheel fixed upon the latter, and a winding-drum fixed 011 the crankshaft and adapted to re ceive a flexible element for operating the de- In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
SETH M. HALL.
