Description

(NoModeL) W. P. DREW. Mechanical'Movement.
No. 233,335. Patented Oct. 19, I880.

UNITED STATES WILLIAM r. DREW, oE PRESTON, MINNESOTA.
MECHANICAL MOVEMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 233,335, dated October 19, 1880. Application filed September 16, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom at may concern Be it known that I, W. P. DREW, of Preston, in the county of Fillmore and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mechanical Movements;
and Ido hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a perspective view, Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view, and Fig. 3 is a plan view, of my improved drive-chain.
' Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like letters of reference.
This invention relates to mechanical movements; and it consists in an improved mechanism for producing from a rotating shaft an intermitting rotary movement, as will be hereinafter more fully shown and specified.
In illustration of my invention 1 have shown in the drawings hereto annexed two shafts, A and B, which may be horizontal or ve rtical, Upon the shaft A is firmly secured a triple-chain pulley, (J, or a pulley provided with three parallel circumferen tial rowsof studs to en gagethe chain, which is to be hereinafter described.
The shaft B is provided with three singlechain pulleys,D D and E, the two outer ones of which are fixed or permanently secured, while the central one, E, is loose upon the shaft.
F is the chain, which is constructed of three separate and distinct sections, G G and H. The two outer sections, G G, are arranged parallel to each other a distance apart equal to the Width of the central section, H. The
ends of the latter are hinged or pivoted between the ends of the chains G G, as shown, thus producing an endless chain which, for a certain part of its length, is single, while the remaining portion of its length is double. When in operation the chain F is adjusted upon the pulleys of shafts A and B and a r0 .Ttary movement is applied to the former the result will be as follows: When the double chain G G engages the pulleys D D upon shaft B a rotary movement is imparted to the latter; but at the instant the said double chain passes beyond the said fixed pulleys and the central loose pulley is struck by the single chain H the rotary motion of shaft B ceases, it being, of course, presumed that the machinery to which the device is applied will be of sufficient power to check any impetus caused by the double chains; or suitable friction devices may be employed to check such impetus.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States As an improvement in mechanical movements, the combination, with ashaft,A,having a fixed triple-chain wheel, and a shaft, B, having a loose single-chain wheel arranged between two fixed single-chain wheels, of a chain consisting of a single section having its ends hinged between the ends of two separate parallel sections, substantially as herein described, for the purpose shown and specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM P. DREW.
