UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFIcE.
JACOB KRAUSS, Oh LEXINGTON, KENTUCKY.
VEHICLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part oflLettersPatent No. 703,601, dated July 1, 1902. Application filed llovemhcr 6 190 0. Serial No. 35,597. (No model.)
T0 to whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAooB KRAUss,--a resident of Lexington, in the countyof Fayette and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vehicles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as wilLenable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvementin. vehicles, and more particularly toa vehicle-x body, the object of the invention being to provide a vehicle-body which will greatly economize space, be easily accessible tolpassengers, and which will be extremely ornamental in With this object in view the invention consists in certain novel features ofconstruction and combinations and arrangements 'of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view illustrating my improvements. Fig.- 2 is a view showing the door open, the front seat pushed forward, and tail-gate down; and Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are views of detailsof construction. I
My improved vehicle-body comprises the base or bottom 1, sides 2, of any desired ornamentation, uprights 3,andtop or cover 4, supported thereon. A door 5 is hinged on each side of the bodybetween uprights 3 and made with suitable latches 6 to hold them in their closed position.
The front seat 7 is supported on pivoted. links 8 which when the seat is in its normal position locates the same in the position shown in Fig. 1 or, in other words, in the door-space or passage-way to the rear seat, but which can be readily pushed forward on the links and be entirelyout of the door-space or passage-way and permit free ingress to or egress from the vehicle. 1
The rear seat 8 comprises the seat portion 9, having a flap or curtain 10 at its forward edge, and back 11 at the rear edge of the seat portion and disposed at right angles thereto and connected with the seat portion by metal brackets or arms 12, which support the lower edge of the back slightly above the plane of the seat portion, for a purpose which will hereinafterappear. The seat portion 9 is cushioned and supported on diametrically opposite flanges or rails 13 on the sides 2 and is held against accidental displacement by means of a clamp 14. The clamp 14 comprises'a metal bar secured at one end to the bottom of the seat and then bent downward and outward and terminates in an upwardlyprojecting'tooth 14 to fit behind flange 13,and a threaded rod 1 t is secured to the seat and extends through a hole in the clamp and is provided-witha thumb-nut 14 to force the clamp against flange 13 and secure the seat against movement.
The'tail-gate 15 of the body is hinged at its lower edge and supported'when open by straps 16, and when in its closed position will rest directly beneath and flush with the lower edge of the back 11, which latter can bemade of a solid board and cushioned and ornamented on its rear face to correspond with theornamentation of the tail-gate, so as to give the appearance of a single solid panel. This construction not only gives to the vehicle an ornamental and attractive appearance, but also adds greatly to-the strength of the seat-back, as the latter is held firmly and rigidly on top of' the tail-gate, and a great portion of the strain onthe brackets 12 is removed.
It will be seen that when desired the rear seat can be entirely removed by simply loosening thumb-screws 14, and hence give'room in the vehicle for trunks andlarge packages,
andwhen the rear seat is'in place every inch of-thevehicle-body is" utilized, leaving no waste space, but at the same time leaving ample. space for comfort of the passengers.
Various slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of the several parts described without departing from the spirit and scopeof my -invention, and hence I would have itunderstood that I do not wish to limit myself to itheprecise details set forth, butconsider myself at liberty to make such slight changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having fully described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a vehicle, the combination with a body having guides in the sides of its rear portion, edge, the exposed lower edge of the back of a door and a jump-seat mounted on pivoted the. rear seat, said back and prop being in supports and normally projecting partially the same vertical plane. across the door-space, of a rear seat mounted In testimony whereof I have signed this 15 5 to slide on the guides in the body, clamps sespecification in the presence of two subscribcured to the bottom of the rear seat and ening Witnesses. gaging said guides, a back for the rear seat 7 3 Y i and having an exposed lower edge, rigid JACOI) IXRAUSS' brackets securing said back to the rear seat, Witnesses:
I0 and a prop hinged at its lower edge to the LAURENCE MCKENNA,
rear end of the body and engaging at its upper L. GRAY .FALCONER.
