To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN E. WRIGHT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hamilton, Butler county, Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vehicles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention pertains to improvements in vehicles and is designed to provide a vehicle adapted for use in all seasons, the provision including a rigid substantial well inclosed body for rough weather, quickly changeable to a comfortable open vehicle for mild Weather by normal movement of simple parts, and changeable for more permanent use for summer weather by removal of parts.
The system of construction well lends itself to various modifications in details of form and in details of ornamentation and in details as to combinations of material, but it has not been thought necessary to go into these details.
The invention will be readily understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a side view of the body of a vehicle exemplifying my invention the doors being shown as partially open: Fig. 2 a vertical fore and aft section of the same in the plane of line b of Fig. 3, the exposed door being shown as partially open, and the front and back sash being shown as partially open merely to indicate their hinged character: Fig. 3 a front elevation, part vertical transverse section in the plane of line a of Figs. 1 and 2: Fig. 4 a side elevation of the structure with the doors and front removed, as for summer use: Fig. 5 a side elevation for the top track of a door, including the supports for the track, the door, however, being omitted: Fig. 6 a vertical section of the same in the plane of line a of Fig. 5: Fig. 7 a side elevation of one of the door base-rails: Fig. 8 a vertical transverse section in the plane of line a of Figs. 1, 2 and 7 of one of the door base-rails: Fig. 9 a vertical transverse section in the plane of line 0 of Figs. 1, 2 and 10, of one of the door foot-rails and its immediate connections: Fig. 10, a side elevation of one of the door foot- 'ails and its runner-spring: and Fig. 11 a transverse section of the rear sash shown in connection with one of its supporting catches.
In the drawings :1, indicates the bed of the vehicle-body, illustrated as being in buggy-box form: 2, the seat: 3, side-walls of the body projecting up from the ends of the seat and having each a glazed panel: i, the back-wall of the body projecting up from the back of the scat, its side edges joining the side-walls of the body: 5, the roof of the body, supported by the sidewalls and back-walls: 6, the front-wall of the body, extending from the front of the bed up to the roof and relnovably secured to the bed and the roof: 7 cleats secured to the inner surface of the front-wall and bed, as by screws, and serving as means for rigidly but reinovably securing the base of the front-wall to the bed: 8, similar cleats to serve in securing the top of the front wall to the roof of the vehicle: 9, a glazed sash filling an opening in the front wall and hinged at its top so that it may be swung inwardly and upwardly to the roof: 10, a glazed sash filling an opening in the back-wall and hinged at its top and capable of swinging inwardly and upwardly to the roof: 11, spring catches secured to the roof and adapted, when the sashes are swung up, to engage the edges of the sashes and grip and support them, these spring catches being provided with two jaws, as illustrated in Fig. 11, and having such form that as the sash is raised the spring catch yields to permit the sash to be engaged by the jaws with a spring bite: 12, side cornices or upper portions of the side-walls: 13, a fascia-board secured outside each cornice, the cornices and fasciaboards being horizontally grooved, as indicated in Fig. (3: 14, a trackrail extending fore and aft in the grooves in the joint between the cornice and fasciaboard: 15, a sliding door at each side of the vehicle body adapted, when slid forward, to close the opening in the side of the body between the side-wall and the front-wall, and adapted, when slid rcarwardly, to take position exterior to the side-walls of the body, these doors extending from the cornice to that portion of the bed forward of the seat and having their upper portions provided with glazed panels: 16, a pair of hangers secured to the top of each door, one near the forward edge and one near the rear edge of the door, these hangers hooking over rails 14 so that the doors are slidingly supported by the rails: 17, clips s'e' cured alongside each hanger and having hooking engagement With the loWer edges of rails 14; the general arrangement of the door hangers being best understood from Figs. 5' and'6, the door being omitted from Fig. 5 so as to more clearly expose a hanger and clip: 18, a door base-rail supported at each end of the seat outside the bed, the seat having an overhang beyond the bed at eachend: 19, a loop secured to theiniie'r surface of each door near the rear edge of the door and having freesli'ding engagement ith the appropriate door base-rail: 2.0, a door foot-rail moun'te'd on the two side edges of the bed forward of the seati 21, a runner-spring secured to the lower forward portion of each door andhooking inwardly over the respective door feet-rails 20: 22, a reartvardly extending notch in each side of the bed at the rear ends of, door.

being formed by the lovver edge of the front this latter support however, being confined to the rear edges of the doors. The front edges of the doors are given additional support by the runner-springs 21 Which not only aid in supporting the doors but serve in pressing the doors elastically upward to prevent the rattling of the doors. The doors are provided with inside and outside han-' dles to facilitate the opening and closing of them and are preferably to be provided With suitable latches to maintain them tightly closed. e
For permanent summer use the front may be removed andthe dash substituted, the
doors being either permanently locked in rear position or entirely removed, preferably the latter. described may lend itself to various types of vehicles it is peculiarly suitable for a buggy the form set forth in the exmplifying illustration. I
