DOOR-HANGER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 403,228, dated May 14, 1889.
Application filed May 29, 1888- Serial No. 275,490. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILBER W. SMITH, of Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented a new and Improved Hanger for Sliding Doors, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to an improvement in hangers adapted for use in connection with sliding doors, and has for its object to provide a simple method of attaching the door and holding it in place, and expeditiously and conveniently adjusting the same.
The further object of the invention is to provide a simple mechanism which may be readily attached to and detached from the door at will, and wherein when the door is slid backward or forward the trucks will move noiselessly upon their tracks.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a partial side elevation of a door with my improved hanger applied. Fig. 2 isa partial vertical and transverse section of the same, and Fig. 3 is a partial longitudinal section on line a: a: of Fig. 2.
In carrying out the invention screws 10, provided, preferably, with arectangular head, are secured in the upper edge of the door 10 near each end. A bracket, 11, is adapted for engagement with each of the aforesaid screws, which bracket is provided with an essentially vertical arm, 12, and a horizontal arm, 13, the latter arm being provided upon one of its edges with a slot, 14, as best shown in Fig. 1. The slot is adapted to receive that portion of the screw immediately beneath the head, the head of the screw resting upon and clamping the upper surface of the horizontal arm of the bracket to the door.
When the brackets are in engagement with the several screws, the vertical arm intersects the horizontal arm at a point preferably beyond one upper edge of the door. The upper portion of the said vertical arm is carried inward, and the two brackets at their upper extremities are secured, respectively, to the ends of the horizontal hanger-bar 15, the edge of which hanger-bar is in vertical alignment with the slots 14 and the screws 10, as best illustrated in Fig. 2. On the under edge of the hanger-bar 15 a series of spaced pins, 16, are secured, for the purpose of limiting the play of the trucks 17. The trucks 17 consist of two wheels, preferably of equal diameter and united by a common axle, 18, on which rides the hanger-bar 15, as plainly shown in the several figures. Beneath the hanger-bar 15 and above the door the usual horizontal track, 19, is held in position in any approved or suitable manner.
Upon the upper face of the track a longitudinal central guide rib or tongue, 20, is formed, representing in cross-section the frustum of a pyramid, as best shown in Fig. 2. When the trucks 17 are placed in position, one of the wheels comprising the same is upon each side of the horizontal hanger-bar 15, the under edge of said hanger-bar bearing upon the axle 18, the said axle being located transversely of the hanger bar and between the pins 16, as best shownin Fig. 3. When the several wheels of the trucks are thus placed in position, they roll upon the track 19 in proximity to each side of the longitudinal rib 20.
In order to brace the device and retain the hangers in close connection with the screws, at or near one side of each screw an inclined recess, 21, is formed on the upper edge of the door, and a dog, 22, is pivoted on the rear edge of the longitudinal arm of one of the brackets, the purpose of which is obvious, as
illustrated in Figs. 1 and 3.
In detaching the device from the door the dog 22 is thrown up out of engagement with the walls of the recess 21, which admits of the hangers being readily slid out from engagement with the several screws 10. The recess 21 extends longitudinally of the door, and is produced in the upper edge thereof, preferably immediately under the hangerbar 15. v
From the foregoing description, read in connection with the drawings, the operation of the device will be readily understood.
In general I desire it to be further under= stood that, although specific constructions have been described, other equivalent constructions may be employed Without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a doonhanger, the combination, with a door having a recess in its upper edge, of an angular bracket having its horizontal arni slotted, a screw for securing the said bracket to the door, and a dog pivoted to one edge of the horizontal arm of the said bracket, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with a door having an inclined recess in the top and screws orbolts provided with flat rectangularheads secured in the upper edge of said door near the ends, of angular brackets having a slot cut in one side of the horizontal arm thereof to receive the screws or bolts, a dog pivoted to the horizontal member of the said brackets adapted to enter the recess in the door, a horizontal hanger-bar connecting the several brackets at their upper ends, a track supported parallel with the hanger-bar above the screws in the doo1',a longitudinal guide-rib formed centrally upon the upper face of said track, and trucks consisting of an axle and wheels united thereby, rotating in engagement with the said track and hanger-bar, one Wheel of said trucks traveling upon each side of the track guidebar, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
