Be itknown that I, JOHN KNOCHE, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resi` dent of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, haveinvented certainy parts are indicated by similar reference-letters wherever they occur throughout the various views, Figure 1 is a view,partly in side elevation and partly in longitudinal vertical section, of a machine embodying my invention, the tub being shown in longitudinal section and the rocker partly in section and partly in side elevationand its actuating-y shaft in central section. Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation of the same, the rocker being shown in dotted lines in 'thevpositionreverse to that shown in Fig. l and the latch shown in full lines engaging the actuating-shaft, and in dottedlinesswung back, releasing the shaft, so that it may be lifted frommvits bearings.

Coveringthe slots and resting upon strips b5 are horizontal strips D7, through the ends of the rocker, so that when the rocker descends the pressure of the air in the cups may raise strips b7 and allow them to pass out through the slots b, and that when the rocker'ascends strips .o7 are held down upon the slots by the air on top of them. Secured to the'strips b5 are parallel bars b, which have notches at points above strips bTv or have a secondary strips placed between them and strips b5 to allow strips 297 to have a vertical movement imparted to them and upon which rests plate C, as shown in Fig. l, or upon which rests rthe base 1910, to which is secured the plate vC, formed integral with which or secured to which is the pairof parallel rods c c', which engage the actuating-shaft D.
In the form of rocker shown in Figs. et and G the horizontal transverse strips bu are sescured upon the vertical longitudinal members'b, so that slots Z312 between them come above the vertical transverse members h3, and the strips E13, covering the slots, are notched at bmbeneath the bars b9. which are` likewise notched, so that strips Z913 may be raised, as shown in Fig. 6, for the escape Ot the air from the cups when the rocker descends. Between the ends of strips b and resting upon .the sides b of the rocker are blocks 515 to prevent the entrance of air into the cups when the valves are closed.` In the form shown in Figs. 1 tO 3 narrowlongitudinal strips bm rest upon top ofvksides b, as shown in Fig. 7, and extend their entire length for the same purpose.

Upon one end of the shaft is a crank d2. At its center shaft D is bentinto a U-shaped curve d3, which lits in between and bears against rods c c' to rock rockerB when crank d2 is rotated, the rocker falling down to its lowest or horizontal position when the curve d3 is in a vertical position either at the highest or the lowest point of its path and being tilted at its greatest angle to the horizontal either in one direction or the opposite when the curve d3 is in its horizmtal position. As is seen, the rocker may by this mechanism have a very rapid motion imparted to it, thereby subjecting the clothes to a thorough pounding to loosen the dirt, and that when the rocker ascends the suction in the cups causes the water and soap to ooze through and take the loosened dirt out of the clothes and that the only motion the operator needs to make is to turn the crank.
To remove the rocker from the tub, latch a2 is thrown back out of engagement with shaft I), as shown in dotted lines, Fig. 2, bracebar c4, which is pivoted on top of rod c to fit down on rod c' to hold the pair firm, is thrown back, as shown in dotted line, Fig. 1, and the shaft lifted out of its bearings, leaving the rocker free to be lifted from the tub.
What- I claim is- In a Washing-machine the combination of a tub, a rocker therein with its ends abutting against the ends of the tub and carrying a pair of parallel upwardly-proj ectin g rods, and a shaft journaled in the sides of the tub and having a U-shaped curve to t'between the rods, substantially as shown and described.
