To ALL wHoM Ir MAY! concerns:
i Beit known that I,LVI ENOS, ofthe town of Almond, in the countyof Allegany, in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washing-Machines; and the following is a i'ull, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being hadto the accompanying dravvings, making a. part'oi' this speciiica'tion, in ulrich--4 j Figure lrepresents a section, through a side elevation,` of the workngparts of the machine.
Figure 2 shows 'a plan or top `view of the -wash-board and beaters, and mode of operating them.
The object jof my invention inthe production of a goed practical and eilicient washing-machine; and it' consists inthe construction of the washing or Buds-box; the construction of the -beatersso that they maybe weighted, the same working on friction-rollersrso as to operate easily and the arrangement of mechanism for working therbeaters; the corrugated hiugodcoveror hand-washing board, forsoaping and partly .washing the i more soiledrpcrtions of garments.- v
' To enable' others to make and use :ny-invention, I will describ to the letters marked thereon. w
The frames which form the sides of the ends-box A-A, are made of boards, out in the proper form, so that the end-board B when fitted in, is in a vertical position. The bottom,'C, may be of sheet zinc, galvanizediron, or any other suitable material, so secured to. the end-board B andv the sidesA A,'that the washing-box ,will
e it more fully, referring to thedruwings, and
' not become leaky when'it is. dry; the box beingsupported-onA legs b b atthelower end, and longbracing legs d d at the upper end, so'that the bottom, C, is zit-'an incline-of about forty-five degrees. Inside of the box, placed near the bottom, `C, are friction-rollers a a, on which the under sides of the pounders D D rest, so that they are moved very' easily by the action of the lifting-arms e,e, in therotatingshaft E, which works in the 'openings F F-against the friction-rollers fj, toy alternately `lift the poundersl D D; the lower'ends gg being i grooved or corrugated in the form of a common wesh-board, where they come ian contact with the clothes, and `press or pound themagainsta stationary board, G, having several 4series of Vholes z' 1,' z' z init. Above the place.
where the pounders D D operate ou the clothes, there is hinged a. lid or cover, H, the under side, when closed,
' being corrugated in the manner of the common wush-bozrd, whichprevents any elopp'ing over of the suds,.an`d
the raising up of the clothes, by the action ofthe pounder-s, when the Vmachine is in operation. When the lid H is opened, and rests back on the end-board B, it is in the position foruse as a wash-board, for Soaping and Y rubbing out the most soiled portion's of clothes, such as collars, wristbands, fito., by hund in the usual manner.
In the top cndsof the pounders D D are boxes I I, in which to place weights J J, so that any desired force may4 bc broughtito bear on the clothes, to pound and compress them between the pounder-facsg g and the board G. The'mnchiue-mey'be geared and operatedby a crank, either by hand or 'other power.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isfq The pounders DVD, as constructed and arranged, for receiving weights J Jin combination' with the frictio'nrollers a a, vertical stationary hoard G having series of holes 'L' and corrugated hinged lid or cover H, substnntially as and for the purposes `hereiuset forth.
In testimony whereof, I hereunto subscribe my namein the presence of- LEVI S. ENOS.
Witnesses: V
