Description

NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN w. FREE, on `RICHMOND, INDIANA.
IMPROVED WASHING-MACHINE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 10,682, dated Noxeinber 24, 1863.
To all whom it 77mg/ concern:
Beit known that I, JOHN W. FREE, of-Richmond, in the county of Wayne and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Vashing-Machine; and I do hereby declare the following to be a iull, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure lis a vertical view of the machine with the top board, J, removed. Fig. 2 is a section of the. machine. Fig. 3 is a perspec tiveviewotthemachine. Fig.4isa\'iewoiftlie strip of half-round india-rubber that is fastened on at the lower side of wash-board D.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures.
To enable those skilled in the arts to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it and its operation.
A represents a box or case, which may be constructed in the form shown at Fig. 3, to receive and hold the working parts of the machine. B is a roller or cylinder to which the handles, and also the wash-board D and hinged half-round piece of india-rubber or gutta-percha, E, is attached. C is the handle to the machine. or gutta-percha. F is a wash-board placed in the back part of the machine. G is the pinions to the roller B. H is the hinge on which the rubber works. I is a staple workin g in the E is a piece of india-rubber hinge H. J is the top of 'the box A. K is aspace between the wash-boards D and F.
The operation'of the machine is as follows: The boX A, being partly filled with water, the clothes to be washed are placed in the open space K, when the handles C are pressed down ward, thus forcing the wash-board D and semicircular piece E in a forcible manner against the clothes, and causing thc water to rush around at the ends of the wash-board D. The washboard F being held in a firm position, the clothes are forced 'over its entire surface at each downward motion of the handles. Thehandlesbeingraisedreleases the clothes, when they will fall back upon the bottom of the boX'A, when the operation being repeated the clothes will soon be washed, as
the piece E produces a soft, yielding, rolling,
squeezing, rubbing surface to thc clothes.
Having thus described the nature, construction, and operation of my invention, what I claim therein as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The piece E, in combination with the washboardsF and D, roller B, handles G, and hinges H, when arranged, constructed, and operated for the purpose and in the manner set forth.
