WASHING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 314,163, dated March 17,1885.
. Application filed Marohflfl, 1834. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, J AMES B. BLAKEMORE and WILLIAM A. ROBERTS, citizens of the United States, residing at Ralston Station, in the county of Weakley and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in WVashingMachines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section of our improved washing-machine. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section on line a: 00 of Fig. 1.- Fig. 3'is a detail of one of the plungers.
Our invention relates to that class of washingmachines constructed, preferably, with a sheet-metal bottom adapted to be placed upon a stove or furnace, the clothes being subjected to the action of boiling water, which is forced through them by means of plungers; and our invention consists in the novel construction and combination of devices, as will be here inafter more fully set forth, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use our invention, we will proceed to describe the exact manner in which we have carried it out.
Referring to the said drawings, Arepresents a receptacle, preferably rectangular in form, and provided with a sheet-metal bottom, A. The receptacle A is divided into three compartments, a. b 0, formed by the partitions d, which extend from the top to a point near the bottom of the receptacle, where the partitions are formed with perforated portions e e, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
Secured to the partitions d and the sides of the receptacle A by any well-known means are strips of wood or metal, which form a seat for the cover D, while the said cover has also The cover D is also provided with.
and removed from the compartment 1). Suitably secured to the sides of the receptacle are the vertical posts E, the upper ends of which form bearings for a rock'shaft, F, which passes 5 5 through the center of an operating-lever, G, the outer ends of which extend beyond the ends of the receptacle, as shown in Fig. 1.
- Pivotally secured to the operating-lever, at
the poi nts h h, are the connecting-arms H, which 6 are slotted in their upper ends to receive the lever, as shown, while the lower ends of these arms are loosely pivoted between the upwardly-extending flanges formed on each of the plungers K K, the said plungers being formed 6 5 with grooves in their bottoms, and adapted to snugly fit the compartments a and 0, and, if necessary, may have a rubber packing, so as .to make substantially a steam-tight joint between the plungers and the sides of the inner 7c compartments.
To do not wish to limit ourselves to the exact form described above, for it is evident we can use the machine independent of a stove,
and can use it with cold water as well as boil- 7 5 ing water; but for obvious reasons we prefer using boiling water, as the steam generated greatly assists in cleaning the articles of clothing placed in the compartment 12.
The operation of our improved washingmachine is as follows: The device having been placed on a stove or furnace, and the clothes having been placed within the compartment I), with the requisite amount of water poured upon them, and the cover D secured in its proper position, it will be seen that the downward movement of the plunger K, by means of the operating-lever, will force the water out of the compartment through the perforations forming a part of the partitions, and thence o with the closed receptacle A,of the perforated 10o partitions d, forming communicating compart- I ments at, b, and c, the imperforate plungers K K,
perforate plungers K K, slotted connectingarms H, pivoted to the operating-lever G, and the rock-shaft F, all constructed to operate substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
