To aZZ whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JACOB L. MARTIN, of Leo, in the county of Allen and State of Indi ana, have invented a new and Improved Washing-Machine, of which the following isa full, clear, and exact description.

The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of washing-machines of that class in which one wash-board is reciprocated with its face on or in proximity with the face of another wash-board for the purposes of securing durability and easy operation of the machine and for maintaining the articles to be washed to the action of the washboards; and it consists in the construction and combination of various parts of the machine, all as will be hereinafter more fully described, and pointed out in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, formingapart of this specification,in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure l is a perspective view of the wash; ing-machine, parts being broken away, Fig. 2 being a vertical erosssectional view thereof on line cc of Fig. 1, and Fig. 8 a horizontal sectional view on line y y, Fig. 2, with the mov ing parts shown in all the views as in positions to separate the wash-boards from each other.

In the drawings, A represents the tub-body or receptacle of suitable shape and depth,having upwardlydnelining rest-boards B extending outwardly from the edge of the tub.

The rubbing or wash boards G 0 with corrugated or other suitable form of operatingsurfaces, are arranged for a reciprocating motion of the one in relation to the other, the board 0 is arranged for adjustment as to its vertical position nearer or farther from the center of the tub, and when adjusted runs always in the same vertical plane, and the opposing board C is arranged to be quickly and easily moved toward and against or awry from the board 0*, and the constructions whereby these capabilities are secured will be now described. Friction-rollerspp are hung by piutles in slots q q of the carrier-frames D D in a mannor that their peripheries project beyond the front faces of said frames, forming anti-frictional bearings for the reciprocating movements of the wash-boards thereon, said washboards being held to bearing upon said rollers by the cross-pins 0' r passing through and projecting at each side of their rear ribs, a, and bearing against the rear sides of the carryingboards D D as shown.

An open-work flexible netting, L, is horizontally hung between the wash-boards by the side strips, 8, being fastened to the carryinghoards D D", and as said boards are moved together to bring the Wash-board faces together for operation the middle portion of the netting drops or folds downwardly; but on placing said boards apart from each other thesaid nettingis drawn more or less taut and horizontal, bringing up the clothing to easy access and out of the bottom of the tub, where the dirtiest portions of the water remain, and in a washing-machine such as hereinbefore described the vertically, reciprocating wash-boards will not crowd the articles being washed to any point in the machine beyond the plane of action of said boards.

Having thus described my invention, whatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

supported above the same, of laterally-adjustable wash-boards, blocks pivotally connected to the said shaft and wash-boards, and links pivoted to the said blocks, substantially as described, whereby the free operation and movements of the wash-boards are permitted in Whatever position they may be adjusted, as set forth.

2. In a washing machine, the combination, with a tub and a shaft supported above the tub and provided with cranks, of laterallyadjustable frames in said tub, wash-boards sliding in ways in the said frames, blocks hung loosely on the cranks, blocks pivoted to the wash-boards, and links pivoted to the said blocks, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

3. In a washing-machine, the combination, with the receptacle or body and the shaft with crank-arms supported above thereceptacle or body, of the vertical carrying-frames D D", suitably supported and adapted for ahorizontal movement toward or away from the other, and provided with vertical ways I), the washboards 0 0 provided with tongues playing in said ways, and connecting-rods between said tongues and crank-arms, substantially as and for the purpose described.

4. In a washing-machine, the combination,

In a washing-machine, the combination, with the receptacle or body and the shaft with cranlearms supported above the receptacle or body, of the vertical carrying-frames D D suitably supported and guided for horizontal movements thereoftoward and away from each other, provided with the friction-rollersp, the wash-boards 0 O suitably guided on said carrying-frames, and bearing upon said rollers and connecting'rods between said wash-boards and crank-arms, substantially as and for the purpose described. v

6. In a washing-machine, the combination, with the receptacle or body having the apertured cleat g, and the shaft with crank-arms supported above the receptacle or body, ofthe vertical carrying-frames D and D the one D having apertured horizontal arm E", the removable pin 9 )assing through apertures of said arm and said cleat, and the carrying-frame D, suitably supported and guided for horizontal movements thereof toward and away from the frame D, the wash-boards 0 O vertically guided upon said carrying-frames, and con: meeting-rods between said wash-boards and crank-arms, substantially as and for the purpose described.
