HENRY B. BURNS, OF EAU CLAIRE, WISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-FOURTH TO EDSEY A. `MUNNS, OF EAU CLAIRE, WISCONSIN.
SPECIFICATION forming part 0f LetteI'S Patent NO. 702,702, dated une 17, 1902.
l Application filed October 31, 1901. Serial No.180,686. (No model) To a/ZZ whom t may concern: Be it known that LHENRY B. BURNS, a citi# zen of the United States, and a' resident of Eau Claire, in the county of Eau Claire and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain Improvements in Fruit-J ars, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improvement in fruitjars; and the object of the invention is to provide a simple and'effective closure which will hermetically seal `the contents of the jar and in which the top and sealing devices are of such construction that the jar can be readily and convenientlysealed. The following specification enters into a detail description of my invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters thereon which designate the dierent parts, and what I claim in the particular construction and combination is more specifically set forth in the appended claim.k
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a fruit-jar constructed in'accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the parts of ,the Vjar separated. Fig. 3 is a view with the top or cover elevated. Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional viewthrough the jar. Fig. 5 is a detail View.
Referring to said drawings, A designates the jar, which is of the usual shape and has a short neck a. The outer surface of the neck a is perfectly plain] and smooth, while in-teriorly said neck is provided with L-shape grooves or recesses a, by which the top is temporarily locked in place, as hereinafter described.
B designates the top or cover for the jar, the lower portion b of which is of such size as to iit snugly within the neck a, while the upper portion is formed with a projecting flange b', which provides an inclined shoulder b2, that is adapted to rest upon theincli'ned upper edge of the neck of the jar. The ange projects suiiiciently to bring the outer surface thereof iiush with the outer surface of the neck ct, so that an even joint is provided to receive the rubber band C, the said rubber band being adapted to tightly close said joint. The lower portion b of the top B is provided with projecting lugs b3, adapted to engage the L-shape recesses hereinbefore referred to,
and said lower portion is also providedperipherally with a number of vertical grooves b4, extending from near the lower edge thereof and terminating near the shoulder b2. These grooves form an important feature` of the invention, for in applying the top the said grooves are iilled with the juices or syrup and eifectually exclude the air from the contents of the jar. Inconnection with the grooves the under side'of the top is convex, ,as shown, so that no air-bubbles will be confined in the jar.`
When the top is applied to the jar, the joint between the flange b and neck of the jar is tightly sealed by meansof the'rubberband C, which is placed over the joint, and this rubber band is pressed firmly against the joint to hermetically seal the same by means of a metal tightening-band]),which is placed over said rubber band and drawn tightly around the same. This tightening-band is drawn around the rubber band by means of` a bolt and nut e and e, respectively, which engage the ends of said band, and the particular connection of these parts is such that no soldering or riveting is required. In carrying out this part of the invention one end of the metal band D is bent at rightangles,
as shown at d, and upon the other end is formed a projection d' a short distance from the terminus, the said projections (Zand d being pierced to receive the bolt. The proj ection d' is formed by bending the band outward and inward, as shown, and the terminal portion d2 is adapted to lie under the other end of the band, so that it may ride thereon and prevent the rubber band from puckering up between the ends of the tightening band or clamp. It will be noted that the nut ef, and head of the bolt e bear against the projections el. and d of the tightening band or clamp and that by turning the bolt the ends of said tightening-band are brought together; also, that a iat side of the nut bears against the metal band, so that it will be held and permit the parts to be tightened by merely turning the bolt also, that the head of the bolt is grooved, so that it may be turned by a screw-driver or case-knife. j
Having thus described my invention, the operation of the same will be readily under- IOO' stood from the foregoing, in connection with the accompanying drawings, for after filling the jar the top is placed on with the lugs b3 in engagement with the L-shape recesses in the neck to temporarily lock said top in place. The rubber band is then placed over the joint between the top and neck, and the tightening band or clamp placed over the rubber band and tightened thereon by turning the bolt. The jar is then effectually sealed, and to prevent working of the contents care should be taken to have the jar filled, so that the syrup or juice will be pressed into the grooves b1 of the top.
The improved sealing devices for fruit-jars constructed as herein shown and described not only provide for hermetically sealing the contents of the jar, but also serve to rmly hold the top in place, as the lugs thereon engage grooves in the neck to prevent upward movement, while the tightening band or clamp serves to hold the top in such engagement and also presses the band against the joint.
I-Iaving thus described my invention, I do not wish to be limited in my protection by l patent to what is herein particularly shown and described, for it is obvious that immaterial changes or modifications could be made within the scope of my claim without affecting any of the advantages of the invention.
I claim- In a fruit-jar, the combination with the neck having L-shape recesses in the inner side thereof, a top or cover having a portion which fits within the neck of the jar and provided with a iian ge which rests upon the neck and also provided with lugs adapted to engage the aforesaid recesses, said lower portion provided with grooves extending from the lower edge thereof upward; of a rubber band placed over the joint between the top and neck, and a clamping-band placed over the rubber band, substantially as shown, the under side of the top or cover being convex.
In testimony whereof I afflx my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
HENRY B. BURNS.
