LEVI N. BACHAND, OFCHICAGO., ILLINOIS..
BED.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent NO. 702,690, dated June 17, 1902. Application filed September 24,1900. Serial No. 30,892. (No model.)
.To all whom t may concern:
Be it known thatI, LEVI N. BACHAND, a citizen of the United States, residing'at Chicago,
in the county of Cook andV State. of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Beds, (Case No. 8,) of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and eX- y is composed of steel or other metal.
Prominent objects of my invention are to provide a structure which is capable of use either as a cot or as a divan and to accomplish this result by practicable and inexpensive means.
The structure which I have illustrated in the drawings is a cot or single bed and has an iron or steel framework supporting a bedtralvportion and are also capable of being' retained in position in linevwith said central portion. In the latter case-that is,`when the end portions are level with the central portion-the structure is capable of use as a single bed or cot and also ,as a couch.
When one of the end portions is swung up or elevated slightly, the structure is capable of use as a single couch or sofa having an elevated-end. When bothy of the end portions are elevated or swung up, so as to occupy nearly perpendicular positions, the structure is capableof use as a divan.V
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating this structure, 'Figure lis aplan of a cot em.- bodying myinvention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same'with both of the end sections in horizontal position. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the same on a larger scale and with both of the end sections swung up into the position in which the structure is to be used as a divan.
Referring first to Figs. 1 and 2, it will be seen that the cot illustrated as a device embodying my invention consists of a suitable frame A, having supporting-legs 1 l and a bed-bottom B, supported by the legs 1 l. The bed-bottom B consists of a central stationary portion or section b and two swinging end portions or sections b b. The sections b' b are pivotally connected with the `opposite ends of the stationary section b, in which way either one or both can be swung up, so
as to occupy positions at an angle with the central portion t. In Figs. 1 and 2 the end lsections b' b are shown in their downward 'be maintained in a lowered position and the other can be elevated only slightly, in which case the structure can be of service as a single couch with a slightly-elevated end. The end portions b b are desirably each composed of long and short sections 2 and 3, re-
spectively hinged or pivoted together, in
which way the short sections 3 3 can be given a horizontal position when the end portions are swung up or elevated, so as to form armrests.
As a simple arrangement for maintaining the swinging end sectionsor portions b' b in their elevated positions I have shown each of the same provided with sectors 4 4, having notches 5, adapted to engage'the upper ends of flanges on the legs 1 1, the ksaid flanges being shown in dotted lines in the figures. set of notches 5 5 is to maintain the end sections b b in a slightly-elevatedposition and the other set to maintain them in a fully-elevated position. J y
As an arrangement for unlocking the sectors 4 4 I have shown each of the same provided with a cord 6, connected to the'inner end of the sectors and extended back to the outer end of the swinging section of the bed.-
One
IOC
.As an arrangement for automatically swingthe same in effect' to swing outwardly from.
the sections 2 2, as shown in Fig. 3.
What I claim as my invention isl. In abed structure, the combination with the stationary portion of the bed, of a swinging end portion pivotally connected With the end of said stationary portion and composed of relatively long and short portions pivotally connected together with the short portion outermost, a downwardly-extending projection on the relatively long section, sectors pivotallyconnected with said downwardly-extending projection and provided with notches adapted to engage the bed-frame, and a pair of side rods each of which has one end pivotally connected directly with said relatively sho rt section, and the other end pivotally connected with the bed-frame, substantially as described.
2. In a bed structure, the combination of a central stationary middle portion, swinging end portions each consisting of long and short sections, sectors carried by the end portions and having notches flanges on the legs of the structure with which said notches can e11- gage, cords attached to said sectors for unlocking the same and rods pivotally connected with the outer ends of the short sections of the swinging end portions and also pivotally connected with the framework of the bed structure, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I hereunto subscribe my name this 17th day of September, A. D. 1900.
LEVI N. BAGIIAND.
