LEONARD J. LOI-ILEIN, OF LUSK, WYOMING.
COMBINED APPLICATOR AND S'YRINGE.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 702,570, dated June 17, 1902. Application filed August 1, 1901. $erial No. 70,493. ,(No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEONARD JOHN LOH- LEIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lusk, in the county of Converse and State of Wyoming, have invented certain'new and useful Improvements in a Combined Applicator and Syringe; and-I do declare the follow-' ing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appe'rtains-to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, andto the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention has relation to improvements in syringes; and it consists in' the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts of which it is composed, all as will be hereinafter fullyexplained.
The annexed drawing, to which reference is made, fully illustrates .my invention, in which the figure represents a vertical'sectional view of my device, showing the same adapted for use in special cases.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawing, A designates the 'cylinder, that is open atthe top and bottom, and the upperlend thereof is provided with male screw-threads b and a shoulder 0, upon which is seated a collar or shield d, thatserves as a stop forlthe cylinder, and above this collar is arranged a flaring tube or hopper ff. which is, female screw-threaded, as at g, to engage the upper threaded end of the cylinder. Thus by such connection between the hopper and cylinder the collar is held in position. This hopper is also provided with an annular rib or projection k, that strengthens the hopper and also serves as a finger-hold.
B designates the plunger-rod, which is provided at its upper end with a ring or handle 1' and at its lower end with a head 3', and the same can be readily used as a syringe as well as an applicator.
When it is desired to use the instrument for substituting an article to be used instead of a catamenial sack, the rod is withdrawn. from the cylinder and hopper, after which a sponge projects from the lower end of the cylinder about one-eighth of an inch, after which said cylinder is inserted in the vaginal 'cavity and the operator having placedthe forefinger in the ring of the rod forces the rod, which in turn forces the sponge, out of .the cylinder and into position, thus closing th'e cavity, and the cylinder-is then withdrawn, leavingthe sponge in place, a stop in upon the rod limiting the stroke of the latter in the .operation.
It will be observed from the above descrip tion that the sponge does not come in contact with the wall of the cavity in inserting the .;sarne, but is deposited at the proper place directly from the cylinder, and the device can be used for sanitary purposes as well, and that in case of miscarriage the flow can be instantly checked by using thedevice as above described, and instead of a'sponge cotton can .be used and the mouth of-the womb can be :closed, and it will be further observed that my device can be readily used as a syringe for sanitary purposes, and it is simple in construction, easily and quickly operated, and at ,-the same time inexpensive to manufacture.
= Having thus described my invention, what Iclai1n is- 1 ,The combination with the cylinder, pro
,vided with the shoulder and threaded upper end, of the hopper having the shouldered and .interior threaded lower end; the shield, interposed between the shoulder of the cylinder and the lower end of the hopper; the plungerrod having the stop w and enlarged female to operate substantially as described, In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
A LEONARD J. LOHLEIN. Witn esses:
U. G. WHITMAN, J. E. MAYES.
