ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
SPITTOON.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 23, 1906.
Application filed September 25, 1905. Serial No. 280,019.
To all 7.1171077?, t Nui/,y concern.'
Be it known that I, FRANK REINSGHMIDT, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spittoons, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forminga part hereof.
My invention has relation to improvements in spittoons; and it consists in the novel construction of spittoon more fully set forth in the specification and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the spittoon, showing the manner of manipulating the same. Fig 2 is a top plan thereof. Fig. 3 is a vertical section on line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a sectional detail on line 4 4 of Fig. 3, and Fig. 5 is an elevational detail of the front of the spring housing or tube.
The object of my invention is to construct a spittoon from which the contents may be conveniently discharged through the bottom, special attention being had to constructing a spittoon which is simple, cheap, one in which the discharging device is readily manipulated, and one possessing other and further advantages better apparent from a detailed description of the invention, which is as follows:
Referring to the drawings, I represents the body portion of a spittoon, and 2 the flaring mouth thereof. Disposed between the upper edge of the mouth 2 and the body portion is a tube 3, extending partially into the body l and partially above the edge of the mouth 2, said tube having a longitudinal peripheral slot 4 for the passage of the st em of a finger-loop 5, the end of the stem being secured to head 6, freely reciprocating within the tube, the stem 7 of the head passing lociosely through the upper extension of the tu e. between the upper end of the tube and the head 6 is an expansion-spring S, which normally forces the head toward the bottom of the tube. The opposite end of the head 6 has coupled thereto a rod 9, having a deflected portion or arm 9', carrying at its free end a valve-plug 10. This plug is preferably Encircling the stem 7 and confined made of rubber and snugly fits within the upturned flange or rim l1 of the central discharge-opening formed in the bottom of the spittoon, the plug having a marginal flange IO, which engages the edge of the rim Il, so that a water-tight -ioint between the parts is assured. Preferably the plug is provided with a metal back IO, though any equivalent construction would answer the same purpose. To prevent lateral bending or displacement of the arm 9, I provide a guidebearing 12 therefor in the form shown or any equivalent thereof.
In the operation of the device the spittoon is seized, as shown in Fig. 1, with the thumb on the edge of the mouth 2 and the forefinger passed through the loop 5. By drawing on the loop the spring S is compressed and the head drawn upward sufficiently to raise the valve-plug I0 off its seat, after which the contents may be iiushed out through the opening in the bottom by placing the spittoon under the nozzle of a hydrant or a stream of water derived from any source whatever.
With my present improvement there is little occasion to handle the spittoon and soiling the hands, as is the case with spittoons which must be emptied through the to IIIaving described my invention, what I claim is- A spittoon comprising a body portion and a flaring mouth, and having a bottom discharge opening a tube disposed between the wall of said mouth and body portion, a movable head in said tube, an upwardly-projecting stem secured to the head and confined in said tube, a spring encircling the stem and bearing with one end against the head, a finger-loop having a stem operating through the wall of the tube and connected to the head, a rod depending from the head and proj ecting into the spittoon, and a valveplug coupled to the rod, and cooperating with the discharge-opening substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANK REINSOHMIDT. Witnesses:
