TO ALL WHOM IT MAY GONCERN:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM W. GORDON, of Delhi, in the county of Delaware, and Stato of New York have invented a. new and useful Whiflie-Trec Tip or Trace-Catch and Cock-Eye, the same being intended for,

use on any Ordinary wagon, truck, or other vehicle on which whil'le-trees are used; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to theA letters of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View of the whifiie-trec trace-catch and cock-eye when in use with a round whie-tree Figure 2, a. vertical or top view of a modification of the same invention, as applied to the iiat whiilletrees of lumber-wagons and heavy trucks.

The nature of my invention consists in applying a projecting stud, key, or pin, a, to the pin of the whiii'letree tip Or trace-catch Z1, figs. 1, 2, 3, and 4, for the purpose of retaining the trace Or cock-eye upon the same when in use, said stud, key, or pin being either applied to, formed out of, or constituting a part of, the whie-tree tip or trace-catch, as occasion may require. The cock-eye e, gs. 1 and 5, in addition to the hole d, is provided with a slot, e, sufheiently large to allow the stud, key, or pin ct, figs. 1, 2, 3, and 4e, to pass easily through it.

The method of application is as follows: Thewhiiiie-tree tip or trace-catch7 b, gs. 1 and 2, is fastened upon thewhiiiie-treefin the usual manner, care being taken to-have the stud or key a either perpendicular or at such an angle as to prevent the cock-eye or trace from slipping oii when the same is in use in ahorizontal position. The cock-eye is also applied to the traces of harness in the ordinary manner. The plate, iig. 7, is intended for use with medium-sized traces, when a cock-eye is not wanted, and is placed in the centre of the trace, at the end, stitched around and riveted, a corresponding hole and slot being cut out ofthe leather constituting the trace. 4The plate, fig. 8, is intended for very light traces, and is inserted at the end of the trace, and neatly stitched around, `a corresponding hole and slot being cutout ofthe trace. In attaching the traces to the Whiiiie-tree, all that is required is to bring the axis of the slot e in line with the axis of the stud or key a, and to pass the trace or cock-eye over it, on to the pin ofthe whiiie-tree tip 01"traee-atch, until itis clear of the stud, when the trace, being allowed to drop in ahorizontal position, as shown in fig. 1, it is held securely on the whiiiIe-tree.

"The advantages of this invention are its simplicity and security. The whifiie-tree tips and cock-eyes are as easily manufactured as any others, are as easily applied, and when applied are far incre secure.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,- is` 1. The stud, key, or pin a, figs. 1, 2,3, and 4, in combination with a whiiie-tree tip Ortraee-cateh, substantially as set'forth.

2. I claim the slot e, in combination with the cock-eye c, i'igs.'1 and 5,' when constructed in the manner and for the purposes set forth.

3. I claim the combination of the stud a and slot e, fig. 1. when constructed in the manner and for the purposes set forth in the above specifications. Y
