(Application filed Mar. 3, 1902.)
(No Model.)
I-L'iIIE w UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE WV. RICHARDSON, OF SPARTA, IVISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR OF TVVO- THIRDS TO EDGAR IV. DIOKERSON AND WILLIAM IV. HUBBELL, OF
SPARTA, IVISCONSIN.
-BRU SH-=-BROOM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 701,507, dated June 3, 1902.
Application filed March 3, 1902. Serial No. 96,487. (No model.)
To all whont it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. RICHARD- SON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sparta, in the county of Monroe and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brush-Brooms; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the artito which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has relation to brushes and analogous articles provided with a handle cainvention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is aperspective view of a brushbroom embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a side View thereof, showing different positions of the handle'by full and dotted lines. Fig. 3 is a vertical central section showing more clearly the segment and worm cooperating therewith. Fig. aisahorizontal section about on the line X X of Fig. 3.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
The brush 1 is illustrative of the class of devices for which the invention is designed. A;
plate or frame 2 is pivotally connected with the back of the brush, so as to swing'to any' required angular position, and is provided with the handle 3, by means of which the brush is manipulated. The plate or frame may be of any construction, and, as shown, its upper end is formed with a V-shaped notch 11, into which the V-shaped end 12 of the handle is fitted and firmly secured inanysubstantial way. An opening 4 is provided in the lower portion of the plate or frame 2, and a slot 5 extends therefrom for reception of the segment 6, attached to the brush-back 1 and proj ected'at a right angle therefrom and toothed at its upper or outer edge. A worm 7 is applied to the plate or frame 2 and is adapted to cooperate with the teeth of the segment 6 to eifeetan adjustment of the plate or frame 2 and hold the latter in an adjusted position. This Worm is journal'ed in a frame 8, fitted in the openings and having oppositely-extended ears 9 to overlap a side of the plate or frame and apertured to receive screws or fastenings, by means of whichthey are attached thereto for holding the frameS in place. The worm 7 has oppositely-extended journals mounted in the front and rear plates of the frame 8, and one of the journals is provided with a thumbpiece 10, milled or knurled for rotation to effect adjustment of the frame or plate. The thread of the worm extends crosswise of the segment and constitutes a stop to hold the plate'or frame 2 in the desired angular ad- 3' ustment. By turning the worm either to the right or to the left cooperation thereof with the teeth of the segment causes the plate or.
frame 2, provided with the handle, to turn forward or backward, and when the desired adjusted position has been attained the parts remain fixed, since the worm also constitutes a lock and prevents displacement of the plate or frame.
My invention provides an exceedingly convenient sweeper for household use in that it is adapted to be conveniently employed for sweeping under beds or furniture, as well as fol-sweeping down walls.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is-.
*1. In combination with a brush, a handle having pivotal connection therewith, a
toothed segment and worm-wheel cooperating with and secured to the respective parts to admit of moving the same to any desired position, substantially as set forth. i i
2. In combination,-a brush, aframe pivoted to the brush, and havingan opening and a slot extended from saidopening, a toothed segment secured to the brush and arranged in the said slot, and a worm journaied in the opening of the said frame and cooperating with the toothed segment for adjustment of the handle, substantially as set forth.
8. In combination, abrush, a frame pivoted to the brush and having a slot and an opening, a second frame fitted in the opening of the pivoted frame and having oppositely-extended parts overlapping and secured to a side thereof, a toothed segment secured to the brush and passing through the slot of the pivoted frame, and a Worm journaled in the frame secured to the pivoted frame and having a thumb-piece, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of witnesses.
GEORGE W. RICHARDSON. [L.s.]
Witnesses:
