UNTTT STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM MAINE TREGLOVN, SE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 701,108, dated May 27, 1902. Application filed September 28, 1901. Serial l lo. 76,879. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM MAINE TREG- LOWN, Sr., a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, (Richmond Hill, borough of Queens,) in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved \Vrench, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The improvement relates to pipe-wrenches; and its object is to provide a new and improved wrench which is simple and durable in construction and arranged to permit of quick and convenient adjustment for gripping large and small articles and turning the same in either direction.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims. 1
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improvement as applied for turning and unscrewing a pipe. Fig. 2 is a like view of the same with parts in section and the jaws arranged to en gage a round article for turning and screwing of the same, and Fig. 3 is an inverted sectional plan view of the improvement on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1. p
The wrench consists, essentially, of a fixed jaw A, having an integral handle B, adapted to be taken hold of by the operator for manipulating the wrench, and of a hook-jaw 0, having a pivot D engaging, spaced angular slots E and E, connected with each other by a slot E and terminating in upturned ends E E and E E respectively. The jaw A has its edge provided with segmental grippingfaces A A extending at angles one to the other and preferably serrated, and the hookjaw C has its inner edge curved and likewise serrated to form a gripping-face 0, working in conjunction with either of the grippingfaces A A according to the size of the article to be gripped and to the direction in which the gripped article is to be turned.
By the arrangement described the hookjaw (3 can be readily adjusted by moving the jaw and with it its pivot D until the latter engages any one of the upturned ends E E E, or E, which form adjustable fulcrums for the hook-jaw 0. It will be seen that the gripping-face of the hook-jaw C can be brought into any desired relation to either of the gripping-faces A A of the handle-jaw A for gripping larger and smaller objects and for turning the same either forward or backward, as the case may require. The invention is not limited to the actual form of the jaws and the slots described, as it is obvious that the features may be modified without departing from the spirit of the invention. The pivotal end of the jaw C is preferably forked to straddle the handle-jaw A, it being understood that the pivot D engages both members of the fork and when removed permits a ready disconnection of the hook-jaw from the handle-jaw A.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A wrench, comprising a fixed jaw having gripping-surfaces on its opposing edges and provided with a slot having a plurality of bearings, and a movable hook-jaw having a pivot working in the slot of the fixed jaw and adapted to be seated in said bearings, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A wrench comprising ahandled jaw having segmental gripping-surfaces and provided with a plurality of connected angular slots, and a hook-jaw having a pivot for engaging the said slots to change the fulcrum of the hook-jaw on the handled jaw to permit it to work in conjunction with either gripping-surface of the handled jaw, as set forth.
said side slots with each other, and a hook- -jaw having a pivot for engaging the said slots,
as set forth.
5. A Wrench, comprisingahandledjawhaving gripping-surfaces on its opposing edges and provided with an angular slot, the ends of which are upturned to form bearings, and a hook-jaw, forked to straddle the handlejaw and provided with a pivot connecting the
