UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RICHARD BUETTNER, OF'BROOKLYN', AND XAVIER MARX, OF NEW YORK, N. 'Y.
POCKET-SllTTOON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 700,733, dated May 27, 1902. I Application filed September 7, 1901. Serial No.74,598- (No model.)
IO This invention relates to a pocket-spittoon" which is provided with a flexible pouch adapted to receive the saliva and with a valve which confines the saliva within the pouch whenever the spittoon is closed. In this way the spittoon can be folded to occupy a minimum space and any objectionable exposure or escape of the saliva will be prevented.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a longitudinal section of our improved pocketspittoon, showing it closed. Fig. 2is a similar View showing it open, and Fig. 3 is'a plan with the cover removed.
The letter a represents the annularbody of the spittoon, to the lower side of which is secured a flexible bag or pouch b. Into the ring 0 projects asegmental shelf 0, composed of an upper plate, a lower plate, and a central flexible packing 0, extending slightly beyond the plates. To the shelf 0 is hinged 0 at d a valve cl, having-vent 01 and which is also composed of an upper plate, a lower plate, and an intermediate outwardly-projecting packing d. WVhen the valve d is closed, the packing d will, in conjunction with the packing a, form a tight joint, which effectively prevents the escape of saliva from the pouch 1) into the ring Ct.
To the ring a is hinged at e a lid 6, adapted to close the spittoon, and provided with a 40 suitable catch 6 and with a spring 0, which throws the lid up as soon as it is released :closed position, Fig. 1.
and the valve cl will open by gravity. thus be seen that when the lid is opened the 'valve will also open, so that the saliva may 55 from the catch. At its inner face the lid 6 is provided with a spring-hook f, having a downwardly-turned end f This end is adapted to engage an arm g, projecting rearwardly from valve d and having a projection When the lid 0 is being closed, the hookv f will engage the arm g directly above projection g and by bearing upon the same will first close the valve and will then hold it in its As soon as the lid e is opened the hook f will release the arm g It will flow into the flexible bag. So, also, if the lid is closed the valve will also close to retain and conceal the ejected saliva within the bag. In this way cleanliness isv insured and obj ectionable exposure of excretions prevented.
What weclaim is 1. A pocket-spittoon having a lid, a hook on the lid, a hinged valve, and a rearwardlyprojecting arm on said valve which is adapted to be engaged by the hook, substantially as specified.
2. A pocket-spittoon having an annular body, a flexible bag secured to the lower side thereof, a lid for closing the annular body, a valve for closing the bag, a spring-hook on the lid, and a rearwardly-projecting arm on the valve which isadapted to be engaged by said hook, substantially as specified.
Signed by us at New York city, county and State of New York, this 6th day of September, 7 5 1901.
