sUsPEDERs AND TROUSERS CONNECTION.
sPECIEICA'rIoN forming part of Lettersilatnt No. 698,456, dated April e9, 1902.
Application tiled February 25, `1901. Serial N'c|.48,781.v (No model.)
Be it known that I, RICHARD T. CLARKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oolumbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Suspenders and Trousers Connections, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the improvement of Suspenders and trousers connections; andthe objects ofmy invention areto provide an improved attachment for trousers-bands adapted to engage a projecting button of a suspenderend'and to so arrange and construct the same as to facilitate the connection of Suspenders and trousers where the form er are Worn beneath the outer shirt. These objects I accomplish in the manner illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a detail view in perspective of portions of atrousers-band, shirt, and suspendenends, showing myimprovementin connection therewith; and Fig. 2 is a detail view in perspective of one of the button-catching devices, which Iemploy in the manner hereinafter described.`
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
l represents a portion of a trousers-band, with the inner sidelof which is adapted to be connected at desirable points my improved button-engaging device. As indicated in the drawings, this button-engaging device comprises a single piece of spring-wire 1, bent to a substantially M shape, the two central members or legs of said M -shaped body, which are indicated at 2, being shorter than the outer legs or members 3 and consisting of two adjacent loops, the production of which results in the formation of'a substantially heart-shaped upperand central portion for said body. From the outer sides of these loops extend downward the curved outer legs or members ofthe M-shaped body, each of these legs or members 3 terminating in a transverse elongated loop or eye 4. It will be observed that the loops or central leg portions 2 are substantially oval in form and the inner sides thereof are arranged in such proximity to each other as to result in a contracted neck-space 5, which leads upward into the daring pocket 6 thus formed between the instantially angular central portion 7, which connect said loops. t i
In connecting the above-described catchbody with the inner side of a trousers-band the outer legs 3` of the body l are, as indicated more clearly in Fig. l of the drawings, inserted betweenv the facing or lining strip S and the goods forming the trousers-band. The elongated end loop portions of the outer legs of the IVI-shaped body are secured in connection with the trousers-band by forming the desired number of thread loops in the sewing operation, these thread loops embracing the longer lower arm of the end loops of said legs. The heart-shaped central portion, however, which comprises the loops 2 and their connecting portion 7,extends, as shown, on the outer side of the facing 8.
In utilizing my invention I provide the end straps 9 of ordinary Suspenders with out-` wardly-projecting buttons l0, the Suspenders being adapted to be worn beneath the shirt, which is indicated at 11. In making the connection between a suspender-end button and my improved catch the shank or stem of the button, which is shown at l0, is pressed upward through the contracted neck 5 into the receiving-pocket 6 of the catch-body, in which position said button will be held against accidental withdrawal by the :narrowness of the neck 5 and by the engagement of the enlarged head of the button with that portion of the catch-body which bounds the pocket 6. is obvious thatin the engagement of the button and the catch-body the goods forming the shirt 1l will be carried by said button through said catch-neck and into engagement with the catch-body. In this operation of producing an engagement of the button and the button-receiving device it will be observed that the pressure of the shank of the button through the contracted neck portion of` saiddevice and the passing of the button-shank out of engagement'with said neck must result in a lateral expansion and lcontraction not only of the loopA portions 2,
but of the outer arm portions 3, the elongated loop ends of the latter thus being caused to slide back and forth in the guides formed by the attaching-threads.
From this construction and operation it ner sides of the loop-bodies 2 and the sub- ICO bent to asnbstantially heart shape and compris'ing adjacent loops, the outer members of said body being adapted to be secured to the inner side of a trousers-band, a suspenderend and a button projecting therefrom and adapted to have its shank pressed between the central loop portions of said catch-body, substantially as specified.
RICHARD T. CLARKE.
In presence of- S. A. WEBB, A. L. PHELPS.
