FRIEDRICH HEROLD, OF BERLIN, GERMANY.
PHOTOGRAPHlC-PRINTING FRAME.
SPEGIFJICATIDN forming part of Letters Patent No. 698,015, dated April 22, 1902.
Application filed December 6, 1901. Serial No. 84,943. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRIEDRICH HEROLD, merchant, a subject of the King of Bavaria, residing at No. 20 Fidicinstrasse, Berlin, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Photographic-Printing Frames, of which the following is a specification.
My improvements consist in certain arrangements and combinations of parts, as are described hereinafter and represented in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front View, Fig. 2 is a rear View, and Fig. 3 is a side View, of the improved photographic-printing frame, the latter being in this figure closed and the upper part of the back being swung backward. Fig. 4 is a side View of the frame in opened position.
In the printing-frames for photographic purposes at present employed the divided back, the two parts of which are hinged together, is entirely independent of the actual frame and may be entirely removed from said frame when the fastening springs are released. Further, two fastening-springs are required, one for each part of the back, and it is absolutely necessary to unfasten one of the fastening-springs and to lift the corresponding part of the back when it ,is desired to inspect the photograph being printed. As the back is capable of being entirely removed from the actual frame, it frequently happens that either it is mislaid or is only found with difficulty when it is desired to close the frame. All these drawbacks are avoidedby this improved construction, which consists, essentially, of the actual frame a and the back, which latter consists, as usual, of two parts I) 0, connected with one another bya hinge e. The lower edge of the part b of the back is connected with the under edge of the actual frame a by means of a hingef, and in this hinged connection a spiral spring his inserted, which tends to open the frame-that is to say, to force the cover-plate away from the frameas soon as the fastening-spring is released, as represented in Fig. 4. A spiral spring 9 is also interposed in the hinged connection 6 of the two parts b c of the back, each end of which spring presses from the outside against the two parts b c in such a way as to tend to close these parts together toward the actual frame a. (See Fig. 4.) The result of this is that the upper part c of the back is automatically pressed against the frame a when the under part b is pressed on by the fasteningspring. Only one fastening-spring Z is thus necessary, and it is mounted on the lower part 7c of the back, and the free end of said spring engages under a hook t on the actual frame when in a closed position. As the upper part c of the back possesses no fastening-spring, when the frame is closed this upper part may be turned back on the hinge e, which con nects it with the lower part, against the pressure of the spring 9 at said hinge in order to allow of the inspection of the photograph being printed.
The printing-frame is preferably made of,
metal; but its main parts may also be made of wood or of any other suitable material.
Having now described myinvention, what I desire to secure by a patent of the United States is In a photographic-printing frame, the combination with the frame a, of a two-part back he, a hinge e connecting the two parts of the latter, a hinge f connecting the back with the frame, a spring h adapted to press the back against the frame, and a spring 9 adapted to press the hinged part of the back separately against the frame, for the purpose as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
FRIEDRICH I-IEROLD.
Witnesses WOLDEMAR HAUPT, HENRY HASPER.
