W. L. OHAMPLIN.
VIGNETTING ATTAGHMENT FOR PHOTOGRAPHIG PRINTING FRAMES.
No. 262,001. Patented Aug.1,1882.
WITNESSES INVENTOR w I BY MW 11% ATTORNEYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
\VILLIAM L. CHAMPLIN, OF WHITESTOWN, NEW YORK.
VIGNETTING ATTACHMENT FOR PHOTOGRAPHlC-PRINTING FRAMES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 262,001, dated August 1, 1882,
Application filed June 2, 1882.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, \VILLIAM L. GHAMPLIN, of \Vhitestown, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Vignetting Attachment for Photographic-Printing Frames, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to facilitate the blending off of the darkness of a photographic picture from the figure toward the edges of the card, whereby pictures known as vignettes will be produced.
The nature of this invention consists of a printing-frame having a slide, a frame adapted to move at a right angle to the slide, a hinged end piece, a. door, and a sliding plate.
It also consists of a printing-frame having a slide, a frame capable of moving at a right angle to the slide, a sliding plate, and a spring, substantially as hereinaftermore fully set forth.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure l is a. perspective view of a photographicprinting frame provided with my improved vignetting attachment, showing the frame to hold the vignette-card partly withdrawn. Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional elevation of the frame provided with my improved vignetting attachment.
To the photographic-printing frame A two grooved tracks, B, are attached, in which a slide, (J, moves, one-halfofwhichis opened, and over this open part a sliding box-frame, D, is held bygnide-strips E, passingintoside grooves of the frame D, and secured on the slide 0 in such a manner that the sliding box-frame D moves transversely over the slide 0. This boxframe D has a series of longitudinal grooves, F, in the inner surfaces of the side pieces, which grooves are adapted to receive the edges of a sliding metal or wooden plate or frame, G, which is provided with transverse grooves H for receiving the edges of a vignetting-card, J. This vignetting-card can be provided with (No model.)
an aperture, with cuts in the edges, such cards being in common use; or the Waymouth vignette-papers may be used, which consist of a sheet of transparent card on which an ovalshaped stippled figure is printed. One of the end bars, K, of the frame D is hinged to form a door, which can be opened to admit or withdraw the frame G, which door can be locked by means of a hook, L. A spring, M, secured on the slide 0 under the sliding box-frame D, holds the latterin the desired place. A springclip, N, fastened on the slide 0, is used to hold a card or tag containing the number of the negative, the number of prints desired, 8:0. The vignetting card-holding frame G can be adjusted a greater or less distance from the negative, as may be required, and the frame D may be shifted and adjusted as may be necessarya The frame shown is a double frame, and the slide 0 can be reversed very easily, so that the picture produced by either negative can be vignetted. Single frames can be constructed in the same manner as described above. This frame holds the vignetting paper or card in place without injury to the same, and if the frame is to be used for plain printing the vignetting attachment can easily be withdrawn altogether.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with the photographicprinting frame A, of the slide U, the transversely-sliding frame D,the hinged end piece or door, K, and the sliding plate G, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with the photographicprinting frame A, of the slide G, the transversely-sliding frame D, the sliding plate G, and the spring M, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
WILLIAM L. OHAMPLlN.
