PHOTOGRAPHlC-PLATE HOLDER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 371,855, dated October 18, 1887.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, PETER E. RUDELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Photographic-Plate Holders, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in photographieplate holders; and it consists in certain novel features hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved device folded. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing one of the lids dropped, as though to expose a plate; and Fig. 3 is a view showing the holder opened to permit the removal of a plate after exposure.

Referring to the drawings by letter, A designates the holder composed of two sections, B C, hinged together at one edge and provided with a spring-latch, D, at the opposite edge. The plate is held by these sections between flanges E E, formed on the inner sides of the same. The outer faces of these flanges are covered with some dark-colored fabric-such as plush or velvet for the purpose of providing a soft contact for the lid when closed, and also to prevent reflection of the light in the camera and the consequent obscuring of the edges of the photograph. Each one of the sections is provided with a swinging lid or cover, F, which is mounted on a rod, G,

journaledin the side bars of the sections and extended through one of them. On this extended end of the bar G, I secure the lever H, the outer or free end of which is reduced and perforated so as to engage a pin, I, on the side of the section and act as a spring-latch.

The sections of the holder are open frames, so that the plates, when held therein, may be exposed by simply turning down the lid or cover.

The operation of the device will be readily understood. The plates are placed between and held by the sections, as before stated, and the sections fastened together. The holder is placed in the camera and the lid is turned down, thereby exposing the plate.

It will be observed that my holder is very simple in construction, and by it the plates can be easily exposed. It will also be seen that two plates may be placed in the holder, and after one has been exposed the holder may be reversed and again used to expose the second plateto take the next photograph.

tachable parts are dispensed with, and the danger of losing the sameis obviated. It will be observed that the levers H are springlevers, and serve as handles for swinging down the lids, and also as springdatches for holding them closed. 1

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s

1. A photographic-plate holder consisting of two sections hinged together and provided with swinging lids or covers, substantially as set forth.

2. The combination, with the sections composed of open frames, of the bars journaled in the side bars of the sections and the lids mounted on said journaled bars, substantially as specified.

3. The combination, with the sections com posed of open frames, of the bars journaled in said frames, the lids mounted on said bars, and the spring-levers secured upon the ends of said bars, substantially as specified.

4. The combination of the frame having a stop on its side, the swinging cover having an extendedjournal, and the spring-lever secured on said extended journal and engaging the stop on the side of the frame, substantially as specified.
