PHOTOGRAPHlC-PLATE HOLDER AND' CASE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 296,443, dated April 8, 1884.
Application filed September 25, 1883.
To all whom. it may concern Be it known that we, SEBASTIAN S. PECKIN- PUGH and GEORGE J. WHITE, of Big Rapids, in the county of Mecosta and State of Michigan, have invented a new and Improved PhotographicPlate Holder and Case, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of our invention is to facilitate carrying photographic plates and transferring them into the plate-holder of the camera without exposing them to light.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a longitudinal elevation of our improved plate-case and the plate-holder into which the plate is to be transferred, showing the plate-case and the plate-holder detached. Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional elevation of the same, showing the plate-case on the holder. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the under side of the platecase. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the plateholder.
The plate-holder Ais provided with a hinged door, 13, and with the usual slide, 0, on the side opposite the door.
To the upper part of the inner surface of the door B a metal plate, D, is hinged, which rests against the inner end of an adjustingscrew, E, held in a screw-neck in the middle of the door. The top of the holder is formed of a longitudinally slotted metal plate, F, which can be closed by ametal slide, G,which is provided at the outer end with a handleloop, H, and at the inner end withv a downwardly-projecting stud, J, to prevent withdrawing the slide too far. Rubber cushions K are placed on the upper surface of the bottom of the holder, to prevent the plate from being broken by the concussion. The platecase L consists of a flat metal case provided at the open end with an enlargement and two longitudinal flanges, M, which are separated such a distance thatthe upper part of the holder A fits between them. The upper edges of the openings in the holder and case are rounded or beveled off, to V prevent the edges from scratching and defac ing the film on the photographic plate S.
The device is used as follows: Each plate S is placed in a case, L, and the slide 0 is pushed over the top opening of the case to exclude the light. If a plate is to beexposed, the case L is placed on the holder, as shown in Fig. 2, and the slides O and G are withdrawn, to permit the plate to drop from the case L into the holder A. Then the slide G is pushed over the opening in the holder to exclude the light. The plate is exposed in the usual manner, and then the case L is placed on the holder, and the holder and case are inverted and the plate permitted to drop from the holder into the case L, and then the slide 0 is pushed over the opening in the case. The plates can thus be transferred from the case to the holder very easily and rapidly without exposing them to light, and as the cases L occupy very little space a number of prepared plates can be carried with the camera very easily.
By means of the screw E the plate D can be adjusted to exert a greater or less pressure against the photographic plate, so as to press the said plate firmly against the front of the plate-holder.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination,with a plate-holder, of the plate or strip 1) and the adjusting-screw E, substantially as herein shown and described.
